Long story short, I just worked as an "assistant" to my dad on a job. Now I'm wondering how I can use the pictures I took. Specifically, can I post them in my blog? Here? Enter them in a challenge? I've seen others post work related shots here in the forums and/or as part of a challenge, but I don't know what kind of contract they worked under.

Here's the relevant paragraph from the agreement:

"[X] is allowed to use the photographs for promotional, news-related and editorial purposes. All other uses are subject to approval by [ABC Co]."

I should note that practically every shot would be instantly recognizable as one from this particular event, so there's really no claiming I took it at the local fishing tournament or something. We worked directly for the event itself, not the press attending the event, so we had access to some areas the press didn't (it was awesome).

I assume I could use them in a personal portfolio to get other jobs. I also assume I can't sell them in any way without permission from ABC Co (which I won't get and wouldn't have the chutzpah to ask for in the first place). So... what can I do with them?

nothing, unless your name is [X].

that is, unless you contact [ABC Co], explain the situation, and ask for permission to put some of the images in your portfolio.
