So I have a Strobist light setup. I am using a 580exII and a 420ex. I am comfortable using the 580 as a master to fire the 420 both on camera and using the hot shoe cord. I also have a pc cord that hooks up to a hot shoe adpater that will allow me to fire my 580 from up to 15ft away. I feel pretty comfortable on how to adjust the 580 on this setup. But what I can not figure out (and I do not know if this is even possible) is how to set it up so that I can use the 580 on the hot shoe adapter to fire the 420. I am trying different manual mode settings on the 580 but the 420 never fires. And since the 420 has no manual settings I was hoping I could control that from the 580 as well.
Is this all just confusing or does someone out there understand what I am trying to do and can help me out? |

The 420 is not equipped to be a slave, I don't think.

It can be a slave, but I think the way he is shooting it, non-ettl he wont have any power adjustments and it will fire @1/1 only.

I seem to be having the opposite problem though - its not firing at all. I know an st-e2 would work - but I cant afford that at the moment. |

Ummm... you have the 580 in master mode and the 420 in slave mode and both of them on the same channel ... right? (it had to be asked)

Also ... if there aren't any walls for the light to bounce around, the sensor on the front of the 420 may need to be pointed at the 580 in order for it to fire. (after aiming the body/sensor of the 420 at the 580, just spin the flash head back around to point at your subject)

you dont have it set to ettl mode do you? I'm grabbing my 580EXII and sync cable now and will try to fire the 580EX from it in master/slave mode for you and see what happens.

ETA I just realized I dont have the correct synch cable for hooking to the 580EXII!!!!! Dang now I have to make a trip to the camera store!

That is what I was beginning to suspect. Anyone know if thats an issue with the 420 only or does the 430 act in a similar fashion?

Gonna have to keep the shutter open longer. :-)
Seriously, unless you have a way to fire both flashes in eTTL mode, either via the ST-E2 transmitter or a longer version of the hotshoe cord, using a flash that doesn't have manual controls is futile at best.
Longer Canon hotshoe cords are available via third parties.

Do the offbrand varieties keep the ettl control? I need to start searching out those I guess. Unless someone knows of a used st-e2 for sale cheap. ;) |
