Of course, I'm talking from a state who elected a moviestar as it's govener. We really didn't know what he stood for and he was elected (of course, I didn't vote for him).

I don't understand people. I went to a live taping of Rick Mercer's show last night (a kind of Canadian Jon Stewart). I stood in the line to meet him afterward. There was a guy ahead of us with Mercer's book who wanted it signed. His girlfriend said, "He sure is nice, willing to meet everyone like this," and his boyfriend said, "Yeah, just like a politician. I'll bet he'll run eventually. He'll win too."

And I'll bet that guy'll vote for him based on his celebrity. Good grief. I have a sinking feeling that most people vote based not on issues or foreign policy or what's important to them, but because of how popular, charismatic, or celebrated the individual is. What the hell.

Two of them, actually; the other one eventually became President Reagan...

R.

Don't forget that we warmed up by making George Murphy a Senator.

I see that backlash voting works about as well in Oz as in the US. Howard lost his local seat to a news anchor. Too bad countries can\'t be governened by the best and brightest rather than the richest and most famous.

Actually, Maxine McKew (the candidate that appears to have won John Howard's seat) is a respected (rather than merely popular) journalist who has generally worked in current affairs, not as a news anchor. Whether a less well-known opponent would have won the seat, we\'ll never know, but other high-profile candidates were unsuccessful.

As for the OP, yes, I think foreign policy matters. It\'s not the only thing that matters, but it\'s not something that can be ignored lightly. I\'m not sure how much it was an issue in this election though - I think if it was the issue at the front of peoples\' minds, then the Howard government would have lost power in 2004, not 2007.
