so im trying to figure out what lens i want to ask for, for christmas, and i honestly am SO stuck! i have been researching and trying to make sure i know what im going to be getting but i really don't know what is worth the money and all the blah blah.. so i know i want a macro lens, and i know it must be under $400, so in your opinion, what would be the best fit for me, with my canon rebel xti, for that price or under...

thanks in advance!

buy the 100 2.8 macro, that is a great lens, but is around 450 $ but maybe you can make a deal with your folks :)

i just have what came with the camera, which is the 18-55mm f/3.5-22 zoom lens...

and i really am slowly starting to get into portraits, but still have to say that i mostly love shooting flowers.

the sigma 105 2.8 macro is very good, and 3-400$ depending on where you buy it (the canon equivalent is more expensive and not that much better).
Will allow you to do great macro, and also very good for portrait (although you might need to take step back so not the most versatile in close environments)

Canon 60mm macro would be perfect for both portraits and flowers and fits your budget. I hear nice things about it too.

YAYYYY!

ive FINALLY convinced them that i'd rather them spend the extra $60 or whatever it is to get the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro...even if it also means its my birthday present too, but its worth it!!

i am beyond excited. i can NOT wait until christmas!

LMA, I just bought this lens for my 400D. I Love It!

It's a fantastic macro lens and doubles very well as a long portrait lens.

Here are a few pics I took during my first trial over Thanksgiving:

The absolute worst thing about this lens is the matter of it giving you the taste for shallow DOF. In extreme cases, it can lead to a real thinning out of the family budget. Enjoy it, it's a lovely piece of kit.
