Since most posts in there are not photography related and will soon be transferred to Rant any day now, I petition to delete this forum.

Anything not mentioning photography is hereto forthwith considered Ranting.

That is all. :p

I'm all for renaming the "Rant" forum to "Rant and Off-Topic Discussions", removing the "General" thread and keeping the other forums for photography and site-related topics.

This way, people who don't want to see these off-topic posts/rants can hide them in their preferences.

I like to read the forums as much as anyone else, but I come to DPC to read about photography stuff, not .

I myself appreciate some of the non photographic sometimes. Way too many of the same threads over and over.

Why not look it up in the Forum Search and continue if the point wasn't made. Thanks, GeneralE for posting/linking the previous threads about the same subjects.

Forum Search was requested as one of the Web Site Suggestions but is it underused?

offer the option to block the general discusion forum and you could keep them as seperate topics, just have to check two boxes if you desire.

I don't agree. General Discussion and Rants are not the same. If you want the ability to ignore the General Discussion thread, then why not request that instead?

Feels like a behind-the-scenes revolt of some kind is going on....

I agree.

forum search needs to be more obvious in more places, and mentioned when it's know the topic has already been gone over before when a thread topic is being repeated over and over.

people like to share photos obviously, and so there will always be threads about this photo or that photo, more user options, and better moderation would help in guiding folks to the right place, and those that dont want to see certain topics block them altogether from the main page.

Renaming is sensible.

I had a similar 'problem' on my forum. just make rant & general password protected and those that dont like won't see :)

It would be nice to be able to hide any threads except the "Announcement and other important site news".

the more elegant solution could be to adopt for General Discussion the same approach used for the (mighty) Rant: invisible by default, visible if the respective option is selected.

However, whatever solution, it will be an improvement for the site to have only DPC's context related topics on the main list.

how bout remove rant and just keep "off topic disscussion".

Here's the problem I have with keeping "General" around but making it an option to be "invisible" for some people:

As a member of the Site Council I'd still have to see it because the "General" forum still needs to be moderated. And I don't want to sift through all the garbage that is routinely posted there. I'm busy just like everybody else, and I volunteer my time to help with this site. A lot of that time is spent "behind the scenes", but it is a pretty big chunk of my time. Reading through the "General" forum is one of my least-favorite things to do.

I don't care what the "unmoderated" Rant/Off-Topic/General forum is called, because then I can turn it off, and if it degrades into a cesspool of name-calling, harassment and stupid posts, oh well. It is unmoderated.

But if it was up to me, all of the forums would be moderated to contain photography and site-related "stuff", with the "Rant" forum reserved strictly for ranting about challenge results and clueless voters. =] There are plenty (no make that an absurdly large number) of others sites to post non-photography-related stuff.

the rant forum is also moderated as i have seen topics get shut down on it. i just dont like the word "rant" when it comes to a place where we can talk about non photography related stuff. ranting and general disscussion are 2 very different things.

How about replacing "rant" with "Unmoderated non-photographic discussion", and enforce moving threads that are totally non-photographic.
I agree that the main forum page is getting a bit mired in off-topic discussion, and would like to see it cleared. I also feel for the site council haveing to sift thru all that, and anything (well almost) that makes their job easier gets my vote!

The rant forum is not moderated for topics. It is only subject to the site-wide terms of use.

There are rants in there that are photographic discussions, if they can be called that. People complaining about the challenges, about other people submissions, about comments received on their submissions, about their score, about their final placement, about cats, flowers, and bugs, etc etc.

I agree.

Agreed.

Like I said in another thread... no one is trying to squash your fun. Heck, we all like to have fun. But! There are certain subjects that others do not like to see or have to hear about. This spoils their fun.

Sometimes, it is not all about "you".
