Sorry Welland. I found nothing funny about either thread. I see people I respect fall apart because someone introduces sick politics into a photography site. There are a thousand sites arguing both sides of the drunk driver, the persecuted, the whatever the problem may be that exists in our twisted society, but I come here to participate in a photography site. I can give links to you and anyone else that cares to battle out the pros and cons of all the wrong things that this world has to offer, but I come here to talk about photography, see what people think about my works, joke around and have fun. I get enough of what was presented today every day on CNN and in the news. If battles and arguments are what you want, let me know, I can direct you to many sites to fulfill your needs.
Cheers

I think thats why they are trying to get all that stuff in rant. Then, you turn off rant, and you will never see it.
I dont mind reading it, but I understand some who may not.

Like I said, just let me know and I can direct you to sites that have only that type of stuff. Why exactly would you want it here on a photography site? I think that̢۪s what confuses me the most about all the arguments. |

I wasn't laughing at either of the 2 threads about the drunk driving, but how multiply threads are always started about the same subject.

There are lots of posts (and some posters) that I could definitely do without (ie. all of the political ones) but there is some pretty good off-topic stuff that I enjoy reading, too, so I don't want to get rid of it all. |

Oh, I'm truly sorry then. I see a funny twist then in your point with our misunderstanding. :) |

But if the kneejerk reaction to those threads takes root, the forums will not allow you to joke around and have fun. Photography only. I'm offended by a photo that was posted elsewhere with a snow sculputer giving the finger. To some a joke. To others offensive. Was it removed? No. Did I complain. No. The result of this is going to be a nice, sterile, humorless environment. Hope everyone enjoys it. |

Scott, you can't please everyone all the time. You know that. I don't see the "sterile humorless environment" you speak of. This is about consideration and hurting other people with posts. You seem intelligent enough to know the difference. |

OK, deep cleansing breath. Everybody repeat: "Why can't we all just get along?" :)
Seriously, and hopefully more civilly:

And isn't that what it all comes down to? So you were displeased by two particular posts (I assume both of them, maybe wrongly); I was displeased by a particular post. The difference is that I simply ignored the one that displeased me. The other two (one of which had a much higher purpose) got a bit of a "scarlet letter" treatment. My reaction is to a major shift in the community (and the policing of the community) because (at least apparently at the time) a few people were displeased.

That's my point. Right now we have a livelier community. When you say everything has to be about photography, only photography, this is a photography site, then it will become one dimensional. You say you don't see it, I'm saying if we go down this path, you will.

I'm not sure to what extent anyone was hurt. But if anyone was, they voiced their concern and it was addressed. So why does it all need to be moved and hidden? Why the need for a change in the way the site has been running? I know that's not in your power, and I don't know if it's your opinion, but that's what I was railing against in other threads. I think I was also set off because it seemed much more arbitrary and reactionary than maybe it is.

It is incredible to me how many parallel forum posts there are now about the same subject! I closed my eyes and chose this one to add my $.02 to.
Here's what I don't understand... If you see a forum post that is labeled with something that would potentially offend or disgust you, why do you click on it and read it? Leave it alone. It's like the person who goes to the doctor and says, "it hurts when I press right here." Doctor's response? "Don't press right there." The only people who are exempt from this are the moderators, who have to read these forums. But the Rant section is supposed to be unmoderated, right? Why don't we just have two unmoderated sections: Rant and General. Then, people can turn them on or off as they wish, and no one would have to control what happens there. Really, in the end I don't see why you'd need to turn anything off. Will someone help me understand why anyone would CHOOSE to go into a forum post with a title that is clearly marked, and then complain about the content?
I just don't get why there is such a hubbub about this. It's a photography site, AND it's a community. Why can't people just make their own choices about how to use it? No one is forcing anyone to read what's in these forums. In my opinion, they are clearly marked and they offer a wide array of topics, which matches our site's wide array of users. I see these forums as a buffet of information. When I go to a buffet and see something offered that I don't like to eat, I don't complain to the chef. I just avoid that particular food, and take only what I prefer to eat. That's why buffets are so lovely-- everyone gets what they want.
In the end, all these forum posts served as the laugh I needed tonight, so thank you everyone! :) |
