Canon has just released firmware version 1.0.5 today for the Canon EOS 40D.

The new firmware is addressing an incompatibility between Adobe's Camera Raw 4.2, Lightroom 1.2 and firmware v1.0.4 of Canon̢۪s CR2 files. Also targeted is a file numbering error, changes photo playback behavior during remote shooting and several other minor bugs.

Improvements and fixes include:

â€Â¢ When playing back images just after recovering from Auto Power Off, the display now shows the last image played back.

â€Â¢ If the camera is automatically turned off while playing back images, the last image played back will now be shown if the power comes back on and playback operations are resumed.

â€Â¢ During remote shooting, images are now displayed on the camera's LCD monitor right after they are taken.

â€Â¢ When using remote shooting with a CF card in the camera, when transferring images to the PC and CF card, the images taken will now be displayed on the camera's LCD monitor immediately after they are taken. For information on how to set the length of time the images are displayed after they are taken, please refer to the instruction manual.

â€Â¢ Corrects a warning message in Korean that appears when updating the firmware.

â€Â¢ Corrects errors in the Spanish menu screens.

â€Â¢ Corrects an error in the Spanish flash C.Fn:2-1.

â€Â¢ Corrects a phenomenon that prevented printing with some print systems.

â€Â¢ Corrects a rare phenomenon in which file numbers or image numbers were sometimes skipped.

On one side it's good to see that they're fixing problems, on the other side it's worrying that they had to do so that soon after the release.

Unless you have 1.0.4 these fixes are very minor. I have 1.0.3 and like many others with 1.0.3, this may be the first firmware update that I pass on.

For those with 1.0.4 I imagine this is a very welcome update.

(edit: changed upgrade to update in 2nd para)

I had the file renumbering issue once, but only once. It will freak you out if it ever happens to you. You shoot, and if you go to replay the image IS NOT THERE! It will get inserted into some empty file name/number elsewhere on the card. You definitely feel like you are overwriting things!

The techterhed shooting bit is a nice change. I don't shoot tethered often, but did last week and it's annoying to not get that instant feedback -you either have to manually replay the last image or look at the computer your tethered to.
