For the second week in a row I have fallen below the 5 mark. I thought my shot for popcorn would have done better than it did. I guess there are a lot of people out there that don't know what I Spy is. I realize the colors are pretty dull, I had no idea until we got our monitor calibrated earlier this week, but did this shot really deserve all the 1s, 2s, and 3s that it got? Tell me what I can do to avoid so many low scores. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

That is a lot of one's actually. The only thing I can think of is people took a 1 second glance at the shot, got overwhelmed by the busy-ness of it and just didn't see the popcorn - so you got half a dozen dnmc votes.
The 2's and 3's are probably harsh votes based on image quality. Bump the contrast (a lot), increase color saturation as you said. Also accept the fact that anything approaching abstract is not going to fare well here in most cases.

I left you a comment, but it seems that there were quite a few helpful comments left for you during the challenge that should give you some idea of what people are looking for. I don't think it deserved the 1's tho.

Description: Create a photo that communicates the subject of "Popcorn."
This image doesn't "communicate" popcorn in any way, the popcorn is incidental to the image. The 1's are DNMC votes, surely?

I just read some of the comments people have left so far today. Somebody mentioned they didn't see the I Spy movie. It isn't a movie. It is usually in the form of a book, kind of like a Where's Waldo type of a thing. There are a lot of objects on each page, and you are supposed to try and find some objects listed on the page within the picture. Some are very simple for kids, others get kind of hard. Just so any of you who don't know what it is can see the whole picture. IMO that is where the 1s came from, people just don't know what I Spy really is. This is actually a great representation of an I Spy page. Obviously the major flaws are the color/contrast and some sharpening, but I still don't understand why all the low votes. Hey, there are some 10s mixed in there too.
ETA: Okay, I Spy is a movie, but I meant that this wasn't supposed to be from the movie.

This was not one of the ones I voted on for Popcorn, but I agree with routerguy. It's a little on the busy side, and my eye is not drawn to the main subject. The colors are also a bit dull. I would not have given it a 1, however. I reserve that rating for the absolute worst of the badly cropped, pixelated, blurry snapshots. I would have probably given it a 4, as I can see some thought and effort was put into it. You were trying. My own entry was a quick shot. I spotted a popcorn cart at a football game, and took several dozen shots, several of which had some potential.
I tend to like somewhat abstract shots. An abstract look is often the solution to not doing the same kind of scene as has been done by everyone else of a given subject. |
