I own a Nikon, and I don't know the ins and outs of the canon line so well. A friend of mine is getting his wife a Canon Slr for xmas as she already has a few lenses for her film slr. He has the money, so thats not really the consideration, he just doesn't want to overspend on features she doesn't need. So, my questions:

Are all canon lenses interchangable as nikon lenses are?

She is an amatuer photographer so the 40D is overkill for her, is the 30D much different--or is that overkill also? What are the other best Canon options besides those?

I'm also recommending he buy the newest adobe elements for her as a way to start into digital editing w/o the monster cs3 pricetag.

The latest series of Canon SLRs (both digital and film) are the EOS series. On the digital side, Canon Rebel XT or XTi are the standard starters (sub-$1000), with 30D and 40D being prosumer (~$1000), and 5D/1D series as professional (multi-$1000's).

The XT/XTi usually come with an 18-55 EF-S lens, though sometimes a 28-135 EF-S image stabilization (IS), depending on the kit.

Canon lenses come in two types: EF and EF-S. EF fit on any digital or film EOS body. EF-S "only" fit on the Digital EOS bodies. I say "only" because that's how they're designed, but some people have used EF-S lenses on EF-only bodies.

The XT, XTi, 30D, and 40D accept both EF and EF-S lenses. The 5D accepts only EF lenses.

Here's a post from Ken Rockwell about camera buying considerations.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
-Jeff

Edit: Actually, it's funny that you ask. I have no idea about Nikon dSLR's and lenses, and would appreciate a quick rundown on them (as mine above). =)

I would give you a Nikon rundown, except I just got the D80 in July. Its my first dSLR, so I don't know much about the other models.

Thanks for your reply!

Doesn't Photoshop Elements come with Canon dslr's? I know when I got my 300D it was in the box, but I don't recall with my latest purchase of the 350D. I also had an older film slr, Canon EOS Elan II. My lenses were compatible with my dslr.

No, Canon doesn't come with Photoshop Elements, but Elements isn't too expensive (get it from ebay and pay hardly nothing)

The 30D would be a great starting point, a used one can be found for around $700. The 30D has a crop factor of 1.6 so it can be used with any EF or EF-S (crop only) lenses. Depending on how old his wife's SLR is she might have older FD mounts which will only work with some special adaptor which I cant' really recommend.

I'd be interested to know what lenses she already has.

Corel PSP X2 (IMO) way better than elements... shop around and it can had for cheap. Right now they are giving 50 bucks back (Visa Prepaid Card) on the site.

Agreed.

If some of them are third party (Sigma) then the earlier ones only work on digital models up to the 10D and won't work on new EOS DSLR's.
If they are Canon lenses though, all should be fine.

I'd go with either the 350XT, wouldn't bother with the extra money on the 400XTi.

If money is not an issue, a 30D, again, I don't think the extra on a 40D is really worth it. Some will disagree.
