Hi all. I'm sure there are others like me, with the holidays coming up fast, I sit and rack my brains for ideas for gifts for people. I do it to myself, but I don't like the easy way out, and I always try and come up with special, unique, cool gifts for the people on my lists. I also don't like to repeat what I've done in at least the last few years. So I thought I'd post this, and people can post ideas, or ask for ideas for the toughies on their lists :-)

The ones that are hard for me are our folks, and my 2 oldest sons (21&22).

And I'll toss out here some things I've done in the past that I thought worked well:
-there are a couple of restaurants here that work with the movie theater, and you can get dinner and a movie gift certs.
-got my in-laws a gift cert to a place called the Hot House. It has private hot tubs, in nice little rooms with fireplace, stereo and comes with a bottle of champagne
-gift cert to a day spa
-got my in-laws a couple of dvd's, boxed them with some candy, a nice bottle of wine, 2 glasses, and a note that said "Lock the doors, take the phone off the hook and enjoy a nice evening together"
-tickets to the Wharton Center, they got to choose from any of the performances showing that season (plays, musicals, concerts, etc.)
-last year we got all our folks a magazine subscription, it was kinda neat, we found it at local dept stores, but they could choose from a list of a lot of popular mags, and just send in a little card that came with it, and they got a years subscription to it!
-I've given nicely framed prints of mine. I know :-), it seems a little tacky, but they seemed to have liked it
-one year, when my wife and I agreed to not get each other anything due to finances (seems like we do that a lot, hehe) I made her a simple homemade card and wrote a long letter telling her, well, mushy couple stuff :-)

So, anyways, any ideas? From high dollar to getting creative cause you're broke!...if you got 'em, throw 'em out here, if you need 'em, ask! :-)

I got my mom a beautiful ceramic frame and photo album. But what she liked best was that I had already filled it with pictures of all of her children and grandchildren. It was quite a surprise when she opened the box.

After years of purchasing things that were either, too big, too small, the wrong colour, blah, blah, blach... I opted for the one gift that no one ever returns... MONEY.

Made my life a lot simpler, and people got exactly what they wanted, when they wanted it.

This might be a bit boring but what about a fruit of the month club? I got that once from here Harry and David. They also do other food collections delivered monthly. The food I got was great.

Actually, that is not a bad Idea, IMO. I have considered things like that in the past, but just always ended up going with something else.

Heck, I would love it if someone got me like, a 'Cheesecake of the Month'!!! :-)

I may actually have most of my shopping done before december this year.

One incredibly useful thing I bought for myself this past year, which we will be getting for someone else is the "Kapoosh". //www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=13749337&RN=395&

It is a unique knife block that you can just cram the knives in anywhere, no cussing while you try to locate the right sized available slot.

My nephews are getting cameras (Someone's gonna get photo stuff, right?)Real ones, NOT those $20 things with spiderman or transformers on them.

My stepdaughter is getting a new camera from her husband, the same Canon S5 that I have (I am pretty sure she is not a member here!), so I am getting her a gift basket (actually, I'm going to use a camera bag as the basket) filled with accessories for it.

Hope some of these ideas are useful.

Last year my sister in law gave me a gag gift: an extendible fork to steal food from other's plates. I'm giving her the "moving lips speaker phone" this year. Courtesy of a recent Woot-off at woot.com

I will be watching this thread to get some ideas for what I will get for my wife. My kids are easy to buy for, they started a xmas list back in Jan or Feb.

If anyone is looking for a good gift for boys from around 8-15 or even older. Those little remote control Air Hogs Helicopters are the thing to get. Alot of places have them on sale right now and they are flying off the shelf. No Pun intended. One of the hottest selling toys Ive seen in a while. I purchased one for myself a few months ago and have wanted to buy another, However they are sold out each time I go to the store, with exception of once, They had one left but it was the same one I already have.

There's one thing I've gotten into the habit of the past couple of years...

For friends I don't buy presents for, especially those overaseas/far-away ones, I snap a few Christmas-ey images and make gift cards out of them. Lots of fun for me, and a bit more personalised for my special people than shop-bought gift cards!
