No, finder is working but there's no "Run" command for shell commands. And nothing else comes up. Anything I start shows up in the doc, but then shows up as "Application not Responding".

I can't get to the terminal, and I guess I can't even start another instance of it (I tried, but I'm not sure how to force the mac to start another instance.)

No command line, force quit doesn't work. Looks like a hard reset is my only option? That sucks considering finder is active. :(

Thanks, it recovered, but I'm not sure my trust in the OS being "robust" has. Seems there should always be a way to force quit applications!

And a way, if all else fails, that the OS can force a shutdown as gracefully as possible.

This thread is giving me horrible flashbacks of Quark XPress on G3 Macs. Crash city.

"Option > Command > Escape" lets you force an application to quit or restart. Sounds like you were already trying this, though.

"Control > Command > Delete" lets you force-restart the machine if it's behaving badly.

You mean Quark Ex-Stress?

That, along with Adobe Page...err...Ragemaker nearly killed me.

If an app has hung up, one can normally bring up a menu containing the option to force quit by holding the mouse down over the app's dock icon or by control-clicking on it. Strangely enough, though, in really terminal cases, I've found this not to work a couple of times, thus leaving the hung application still sitting there (if it can, indeed, be hung and sitting at the same time). Invoking the force quit menu using option-command-escape and selecting the app did the trick, though.

ooooh, I had almost blocked Pagemaker out of my mind... I didn't mind Quark so much, just the G3s I was using it on. I had Quark 4.01 at home on Windoze, never crashed it once.
