Hey everyone,

I have been reading up on studio lighting and trying to figure out exactly what and how many lights I need. I want to setup a area in my basement with a backdrop to do portraits and learn the lighting techniques in dealing with studio lighting.

My ceilings at the current house I live in are only 7.5 feet. However, I plan on moving eventually and do not want this to be the deciding factor in how I set this up. I am also one of the type of people who really looks at it from a buy it once and have the quality equiptment idea, where I dont want to buy something to learn on and upgrade later.

I was hoping for some ideas of what you guys have for lighting in your studio, like positioning, type, and how many you are using. How happy you are with them... ETC... Also, if you have a photo or 2 or your studio you can also shamelessly plug them here.... Also on the backdrop holder and muslin backdrops, wondering where you purchased these as well.

I was also hoping that a few of you may have low ceilings like have to deal with right now and could give some tips to working with this.

As always any help will greatly be appreciated,

Thanks
Rich

I purchased a lot of my equipment including the muslin backdrops from Ebay. They are brand new still packaged and everything, and a lot cheaper. Go take a look, you will find all kinds of stuff. I love it!

BUMP, as I am in this same boat. I've always used natural light and if you can believe it, I have NO flash on my camera either.

lol, I've come this far, now its time to start using faux lighting and studio lighting but I have NO idea where to start.

Well we just turned our garage into my studio. Is is under the house and I had some stuff to deal with.

I now own only 2 Alien Bee lights.

I bought some muslin backdrops from a user here and bought two paper rolls from B&H.

I tiled the floor with vinyl tile.

To hold the muslin backdrops up I bought a dog run cable and stretched it across one of the floor joist. For the paper I went to Home Depot and bought some electrical conduit pipe. These hold the paper rolls in place and with the cable for the muslins I can move them like curtains.

I will take photos later and post links to the suff I bought. On my way out the door now.
