You're a brave man, John. More than 95% of CompactFlash cards sold on eBay are counterfeit. Hope you're in the minority!

Think I am in the minority, have 2 EX III 2gig cards both real, and this guys photos are poor not stock, and clear enough to spot a fake I hope.
Got it cheap enough so that if it is a slow 4 gig it was worth it and if it works out i will use it for my main and the 2gigs for spares.

One of the major benefits of CF is that it doesn't need to change its format type to accomodate larger cards.

The only thing that I've ever heard of having a problem with larger CF cards is card readers and I think that is deliberate idiocy on the part of the manufacturers. (I have specific reasons for that view and have used more than 40 different types of card readers in multiple incarnations).

On the other side, I have a PDA which is going on 4 years old now and has no trouble with a 16 GB CF card, although it cannot use the SDHC format.

There is a program on my other PDA which cannot write to either a SD or CF card if the size is greater than 2GB, but this is an issue with software. The PDA has no problems with any other card outside of SDHC. It will receive a 32GB CF when the price comes down a bit. If that problem occured with the 30D, a firmware fix would not be far off.

Short answer: outside of the counterfeit card issue, you have little to worry about with compatibility on CF cards.

On the 20D, I believe you need to format the card in FAT32 on a PC before it can see the full size (might be a fix in firmware but I have had no need to check). I would bet the 30D is closer to the 20 then the 40 :-)

Ive got a couple 8 gig that work great. Counter only goes to 999 though so in jpg mode ya never know how many you have taken.

I just checked the card in my camera - a 2gb Ultra II that I bought over a year ago on eBay. Fake. It's the right size and has been reliable but now I'm wondering about those write speeds. Time to go see if that a-hole is still selling.

Thanks everyone for the info, if they work in the 20D then 30D no prob, Noticed when i had a 4 gig in jpg count was 999 actual count I think was around 1200. Sorry to hear yours was a fake ken, ultra II 66-80 speed there
are a couple of freeware utils to test speed around. Have used lexar plat
and sandisk utra II, Ex III and some no name brands and all have worked
well except a rocketfish from futureshop.
