I am considering buying a noise reduction plug in. I have determined that Paintshop Pro is indeed compatible with Photoshop plugins. I noticed that both Noise Ninja and Neat Image offer a lower priced standalone and a plug in version for just a few bucks more. Is there any reason why someone who uses an image editor would want to use the standalone app?

The standalone versions are good if you are running a batch of shots, other than that I only use Neatimage inside of photoshop.

With neat image, at least, when you buy the plugin version you also get the standalone. It has batch processing functions, as Simms pointed out, and this would be great if you had to do a whole bunch of shots in questionable lighting at high ISO, for example. The thing about the plugin that's really attractive is that it lets you work on selected portions of your image. So both are good :-)

That's what I needed to know. Thanks. I believe they both have demo versions, so I'll give them both a shot before I decide.

I prefer the plugins because I can use it as just another step in the process and I don't have the save as JPG in PS, open as JPG in Stand Alone, Process, save as JPG in Stand Alone, open as JPG in PS. That's two saves and the resulting compression for JPG.

Using directly with the application, there is no save required, you work on the item in memory -- and then you can save using the PS or PSP native format to reduce loss.

Plus the plug in is more convenient.

You didn't mention Noiseware... my review of that is at //photographyvoice.com/pv/reviews/software/noiseware41.aspx

I didn't mention it, because I was not aware of it. I will check that out as well, thanks for the review on it.

I also spotted your other review of PSP XI. I upgraded from v7 recently, and find your review to be pretty accurate. I'm still using some of the newbie tools in it, but like yourself, the first thing I did was turn off the organizer. It was taking up system resources and screen space that could not be spared.

I have the plug-in version of noise ninja and am very happy with it. it works great to be able to put it in an action and put the noise reduction (simply) on a separate layer than the original image. That way it is easy to only noise reduce part of the image
