Once again I am calling on the DPC Community to help me with some photography ideas for my Senior Art Seminar Class (as I did with this thread).
I have a literature review coming up on one of the most important pieces of literature from my discipline - my discipline being photography of course. The piece of literature could be a book or a lengthy and influential article. I haven't decided whether I want to talk about photography in general or focus in on digital photography.
Basically, I am asking you what you think is the one of the most influential pieces of literature in photography and/or digital photography?

Gilles has posted the two best known, for sure; although Sontag's book is perhaps simply dated now, and Barthes is very much more of a personal survey and quite different from most of his theoretical work.
I'd also consider the more recent 'The Ongoing Moment' by Geoff Dyer - a slightly crazy ramble, but with some interesting ideas.
Ahley La Grange's 'Basic Critical Theory for Photographers' is a fine introduction, although also dated, having been published in 1972. Still a really useful book though.

The Photographers Eye by John Szarkowski might be worth a look.
I would look into anything by John Szarkowski, essays, letters, articles etc.
I would also reccommend On Photography. Dated or not every page is loaded with provocative thought. I didn't agree with everything she said but she makes you think on many levels and in many directions.

I don't know the name of the book and it might be hards to find but Ansel Adams developed the zone system :0)

| The series of books that Laura is refering to is: The Camera, The Print and the Negative. I do beleive they are all still in print. They are great but very technical books. It's been a while since I have read them, and some of the info is no longer of use, like developing of film, but the exposure of a subject is still vital, not as vital in the digital but still a critical factor. |
