The Spyder Express 2 or the Pantone Huey Pro...

The price difference isn't much.

I just read this article in After Capture. It helped me make up my mind.

I like the fact that it constantly reads the ambient light in the room and keeps the monitor updated on the fly. Plus you can load up different monitor profiles for different uses, games, editing, movies etc.

JMHO.

I read the same article and it made me consider the Pantone Huey Pro as well.

Hmmmmm.

Ratings on Amazon seem positive for both.

Would I really use the ambient light feature? Hmmmmm.

Tough choice.

I'll add another vote for the Huey, I've had it about a month now and it works great! Adjustments are neat and the little reminder to calibrate weekly is really easy and handy.

have a read through the tool comparisons at Dry Creek Photo

//www.drycreekphoto.com/Learn/monitor_calibration_tools.htm

They seem to do a thorough job of reviewing them.

Those reviews didn't help me.

I guess the Pantone Huey is most desirable?

My guess is that it is like the canon/nikon debate but abit tamer. In reality they will both work great. I have the spyderExpress and it works great, I make prints at places around town and it looks like my screen. But much like when I bought Nikon way back when, it was because the best option when I was at the store. I think the Pantone would work well too.:P

Ahhhhhhh, calibration is goooooooood. :) I can't believe I was working on my monitor before. I knew it was messed up but not that messed up.

I've had the Huey for a year. Works well and I seem to now get a good match between my monitor and printer as long as I use Canon Paper and inks on my i9900.

ok I got the Huey in the mail yesterday. Hooked it up and ran it just now.

How do I know it is correct?

I ask because everything has a redish tint now.

Just got my Huey today.

@ rex run it a couple of times, after my first run through my monitor had a red-ish tint to it and after the second run it worked itself out.

I can't believe I was working with an uncalibrated monitor for this long.

If anyone that reads this is on the fence about getting a monitor calibration system let me tell you it's worth every penny.

What kind of monitor are you using?

My Dell monitor allows me to choose what display settings I want to use, Desktop, Gaming, & Multimedia modes. If I use Gaming or Multimedia the settings produce a more warmer or reddish tint to them when I have it in Desktop mode everything looks great.

I found this under the support section at pantone.com. Check the other links towards the bottom of the page, there is good info there as well.

It may be just fine. Give your eyes a couple days to adjust and compare it to an uncalibrated monitor.

When the huey finishes it should give you some options about color temperature that you could try. Its also possible that you just aren't used to seeing the corrected colors ;) My monitor (Dell 27FPW something) had a really green tint until I corrected it. Looked really pink at first but its actually 'correct' now!

Well, I ran the spyder2 today, I had to go and get the software update to get the screen that let me see the before and after shots. It looks a lot different, but is it really better? Looking at my old photos, the definitely don't look very good, so hopefully my new adjustments will look good to others as well.

Well in this image does the skin tone look natural?

When I set my Huey and choose all options I can she has a red tint to her skin.

Looks OK to me, on my Huey-corrected laptop screen. The greens should look off if there's a red cast, and they don't. She looks a little pale, but not red.

I've had Huey (pro) for a year and love him. I even take him on vacation because I refuse to edit without him! Made a huge difference in getting prints that looked like I expected them to, and that's why I got him. I appreciate the calibration reminders, too. Definitely feel I got my money's worth.

Her skin tone looks fine to me. It could be quite difficult to figure out if there's a problem with the calibration, or you're just not used to seeing the colours shifted like this after calibration... unless we can call around to your house and see it for ourselves :)

When I first calibrated my LCD it looked pinkish to me. I think monitors are calibrated to be a 'cool' colour by default so any proper calibration will warm up the colours.

You could always try editing that image you just posted to make her skin look correct on your screen (i.e. remove the red tint you're seeing in PS) - Then post the image, and we'll see if her skin looks too cool.
