I was just thinking ... and now thinking aloud ...
What if DPC were to hold challenges with rewards?
i.e. other than the ribbons... something like a free membership. Like one was held by Rex just recently. I'm not saying every week ... but how about one membership say every fortnight or so.
That would amount to about 24 memberships in a year. Actually now to think of it even 52 doesent sound too bad.
But just thinking about it .. participating members could contribute to that membership.. .like say 50 cents or a dollar or something. Excess money can be used to hold other side challenges or something similar.
Just an idea ... |

wow!
No takers?
I'd have liked to see the flip side of something like this.
Anyway ... |

I think its just that its been said before and you know I kinda like the no prize side of it.
If there was to be a reward like free membership then there would be people with 25 years of membership waiting to be used.
Its a nice idea but I think the change to DPC would be enormous.

I think a prize would influence voting.
I wouldn't put it past some people to vote all photo's low just to get that prize.
Sorry to say it like this, but even now with no prizes except a ribbon there are allready so many trolls around. Imagine what that would be like if there were a prize to win. |

IF the site were to offer "tangible rewards" for specific challenges, this would be the perfect time to implement voting-by-jury for those challenges.

you go first. ;o)
Sure way to invite friend voting etc. Not really a photo challenge any more. Just a popularity contest of who can get the most people to vote. |

Rewards for challenges isnt in the spirit of DPC, to introduce it would destroy the site as it is.
Trust me, getting your name up on that frontpage to the envy of your peers is reward enough.. |

I don't know what that means.
I hear about juried artists from descriptions of exhibits and contests, but I've never seen a definition.
A little elaboration, Robert?
BTW, as far as the OP's idea, IMO it's cleaner and better to have no rewards......there are already too many reasons to try and push the limits, and that's even a little scary when you consider that there is nothing save a virtual ribbon.
Look how ugly some of the threads about winning entries are now......can you imagine what it would be like if there was monetary reward?

Count me against, also, for the various reasons cited above.

Truth be told, if this were put into place imagine the number of rules violations and cheating, and voting complaining that would take place. I mean people push the limits and violate the rules all the time for a dang virtual ribbon. Attach something with actual value onto it, and it doubles, triples, or quadruples? This is an idea that has no wings and wont get off the ground for more reasons than we can put in a thread.

Count me in as one of those opposed to this idea.

Many times it has been suggested we have some challenges that are judged not by site-wide voting but by a selected jury, either from off-site or of nominated, respected members of DPC. These juries would be relatively unlikely to be subverted into "friends voting" and the like.
I'm NOT really approving of the suggestion, btw. I'm not sure what the site would gain from instituting prizes of any value. But if we DID do it, I'd be in favor of juried voting rather than site-wide voting.

I do see a point there now. I understand there would be too many difficulties implementing something like that.
Its funny how when money is brought into the equation things seem to change. Not just here... but everywhere. It happened with me elsewhere earlier today and the thoughts echoed here went through my mind too.
But just to play the devil's advocate, Brad does seem to have some interesting suggestions too. A jury based judging would be cool too. Ofcourse with a lot of disclaimers et al. |
