Well apparently my debit/visa didn't work when I placed my order last night so I just cancelled it. I figured that was a sign HAHAHA. The money is there so I must have miskeyed something. Anyhow, my husband has me ordering the refurbished camera from Cameta. I've heard a lot of good things about Cameta.
I'm calling them as soon as they open to see exactly what they mean by refurbished because I did read that there was some misinformation given in other areas.

Also between the 18-200mm lens and the 28-200- which? A friend here told me to go with the 28-200 but many are raving about the 18-200.

I knew I hit that order button too soon last night!

edit to add-
anyone know if refurbished would still come with the camera strap, charger and battery? If it says "all manufacturer's accessories" does that mean it comes with all that?

Sorry for all the questions. But I will soon be done bothering you hehe.

The camera SHOULD come with all that comes as new so you will get strap, manual, cd blah blah blah everything you would get as if it was new but it would of already been opened.

okay next questions-

would you order it refurbished?

it only comes with a 90 day warranty. I've had my Olympus for 2 years and never had to send it in or use the warranty.

If I buy refurbished I can get the 18-200mm lens. If I buy new, I have buy a cheaper lens.

i bought a refurbished canon point and shoot as my first digicam and it worked perfectly. No cosmetic or electronic faults of any kind, the only thing that ever went wrong with it was the shutter closure thing wouldn't close all the way because we went through a puddle and it got covered in ice and gravel. Still functioned as a camera though, just took a bit of a whack.

I wouldn't worry about it. 'Refurbishment' covers such a wide variety of repairs that it could be something incredibly minor.

I bought my macbook pro refurbished, no probs yet, I usually buy my glass used and that is less than refurbished, I would not hesitate to buy something from a reputable company refurbished. I bought a brand new lens once and after a few weeks it had specks of dust in it and it really annoyed me, I have many refurbished/used lenses that have a few specs of dust in them and I don't care at all.. it's all a mental thing you see.

Buying bodies used/ebay or stuff like that is always dodge and i try to avoid it, but buying a REFURBISHED unit from a reputable company I see no problem.. 3 months warranty is normal. you have 90 days to trash it and send it back LOL.

Bottom line is this. You are the one buying it so if you feel comfortable go for it.

I bought a Nikon point & shoot refurbished from Cameta a few years ago. It came with everything that the original did, an dwas in pretty good condition (a few minow dings).

Plus they sent me candy. I like candy.

Okay it's ordered!

I just called Cameta- much easier then ordering online anyways. VERY nice people- well of course I'm giving them money! Anyhow, body was sent from Nikon, gone over with a fine tooth comb. Is has a 90 day Nikon warranty, and a 1yr warranty from Cameta.

So I got the refurbished body and the 18-200mm VR lens.

Woot Woot!

I have purchased a couple of refurb cameras from Cameta as well as other items. They work great and have always been good to deal with.

Refurb often is simply something that was returned and then tested by the manufacturer. I returned an MP3 player the other day that will certainly end up being sold that way. Nothing actually wrong with it, I just really did not like the ergonomics of it.

Oh I'm so glad some of you have bought refurbished through Cameta. You just made me feel so much better.

Customer service was very helpful, and even gave me 100 dollars off for ordering over the phone and charged me 20 for shipping instead of 35 which is what I would have paid if I ordered online.

He said it should be here no later than Thurs but probably be here by tues. or weds. depending on when it ships.

I've purchased one refurbished camera, one new one, and a number of lenses from them through ebay and picked them up at their store, since I live very close to the store. The camera body (Oly E-300) was in new condition and had less than 40 shutter clicks to it. It's still working perfectly and cosmetically appeared new. Some cameras that are labeled refurb have not even been sold to the general public but were sales rep demo models. I've also read where refurbs have been gone over and examined by the manufacturer with a fine tooth comb even more so than the new models.

If I'm not mistaken, the the manufacturer's warranty is for 3 months and Cameta adds another 9 months for a total of one year. Cameta does not only sell through ebay, but has a brick and mortar store (and a warehouse from where your package will be shipped). I know a number of the salespeople there and they are very nice and aim to please. When I purchased my E-300 it came with all accessories. The only possible accessory it may not come with is a lens hood, but I'm not even sure that Nikon supplies hoods with their lenses or you have to purchase them separately. I think you'll be very pleased with your new acquisition. Congratulations and enjoy.

Nikon and refurbished. I can see how those 2 words relate ;-p

My Dell notebook is a refurb as was my now 4 year old desktop that it replaced. Refurbs usually are new items that have been opened before and most all come with full manufacturers warranties.

I usually will buy refurbed if I can find the item I want.

Some may have slight cosmetic damage, but never anything that will cause mis-function.

I found plenty of refurbished Canons also so don't go thinkin you're all that:oP

I looked at both cameras. Actually a 5D is my ultimate dream camera but I don't have the ultimate budget haha. Didn't like the way the 40D felt in my hand or how things were set up on it.

I don't know many canon owners around these parts but I know a lot of Nikon owners who swear by them and have been using them for years and years.

I really don't think you can go wrong with either though.

It's a sign alright. Save a few extra bucks and pull the trigger on that 5D!

Are you sure they are swearing by their cameras? Most I see are swearing at them.

can't say I've seen anyone swearing at their camera whether it's a nikon, or an Olympus, or a Sony lol.

It's great that we all have our own opinions and likes though.

Back on topic, let me reiterate what others have said: most of the time, refurbished consumer items never had much, if anything, wrong with them to begin with. They were returned for various reasons and cannot be resold as "new". They often represent real bargains, because each item has gone through a thorough check-up procedure before being repackaged.

I've bought refurbished lenses from Adorama and have been very happy with them.

I bought 3 Canon P&S refurbished cameras, & a refurbished SB-800 from Adorama. The cameras are Xmas presents, so I can't tell you how good they are over the long haul, but they all worked. The flash looked brand new, & works perfectly, I am very pleased with them, & the price savings is huge.
