I just received my Pentax 50-135 f2.8 Star lens and am blown by how incredibly quiet it is. Just got it ten minutes ago and am pleased with how light and resposive it is on the K10D..Did a few shots wide open and my copy is incredibly sharp even at f2.8. Nice one Pentax...Will critique asap...

I'm surprised that you didn't get one before now. |

I tried one in the store the other day, it's alot smaller than I expected. Well built and the sealing around the lens mount seems very sturdy. I shot some test frames, mostly at 135mm 2.8, and unfortunately wasn't impressed with the quality (apparently theres a bit of an issue with QC with the DA*s, if I were buying I'dve tried out a couple other copies). For 1300 bucks, I expect alot at 2.8.
On the other hand, the bokeh was quite good, smooth and creamy. AF was impressive and silent, tracked well on AF-C, and didnt hunt as much as my 50-200 (I'm sure thats a function of the aperture and not the SDM, though).
All in all, I thought it was a pretty good package and certainly a step in the right direction for Pentax in the "pro" direction. 135 is too short for my purposes, and 1300CAN is an utter joke (when its under $1000 in the US). If you're buying this lens, however, make sure to try out a few copies if you can.

I could have received it a while ago but didn't to allow consumers who really need it to get it before I did...In fact I haven't yet received my 16-50 yet.

I don't see why not; you just won't be able to use autofocus. ;-Þ |

The reason why I asked is yamada-denki shop near my house is selling a Pentax *ist DL2 body (second hand but in very good condition) for 25000yen, and I have this prime at home so sort of thinking of taking it. I do miss prime lense because of SLR times.

This image was taken with a 20+ year old M50 1.4 on my DS. The old lenses work very nicely.

I'm thinking about picking up the Tokina 50-135 (Nikon mount) with the same optical formula. Seems like a good range and a nice compact package that is still small enough for a fanny pack bag. |
