Hi guys...
I have been using a Sony DSC-H1 for a while now and plan to upgrade soon. Need to decide between Nikon D80 and Canon 400D XTi. I have been following quite a few threads on the forums to help me decide but i am still a bit confused.I have the following queries:

1. Given that i might have to stick on with my new acquisition for a while, which one between D80 and XTi offers more long term economies? I mean with respect to future lens enhancements (which family has better lenses at lower prices etc)

2. I need some guidance in selecting the lenses to start off with. Should i just go for the in-kit lens or buy only the body and if so, then which lens/lenses should i invest in to begin with? I get a bit confused with the f values and range values.. what do i need to look out for? My budget to begin with is approx US$1500 for the body and lens assembly.

Nikon & Canon

The 2 superpowers in the camera market and its great they are in competition because it keeps prices down and quality up.

Both systems are great, both will give you years and years of use and upgradeability. Toss a coin or decide which one you believe will better suit your style of photography.

Better still, go to a shop and hold them. Take the one whichever fits your hand best.

Aye they're quite comparable in most ways. I find the 'standard' settings on Nikon cameras to have more saturation in the reds, greens and blues than Canons do but that may have been the D80 (?) I tried in the store before i got my XTi.

They're also comparable in terms of lenses too and seem to do the same focal lengths, aperture settings for around the same price.

I have heard Nikon's fit a little better but i have had absolutely no problems with the Canon, it fits my hand well, even though it is pretty small without the grip and I've held it throughout a 4 hour wrestling show, at ringside, running around everywhere, taking 1000 shots with no trouble whatsoever with focussing, shutter lag or image quality.

But for $1500 you could get a decent amount of kit, even a 40D with that money. I'm sure I've seen them for $1100 somewhere online...

Very good advice. I've been researching for months. And was actually at the same point as you. But I have more money to spend so then it was between the Canon 40D and Nikon D200. I've decided on the Nikon D200. Mainly because I've handled it- thanks to a friend and I like the lens options. Not to mention I can borrow stuff from my friend LOL.

I think either one you will be very happy with!

edit to add- I think the kit lens would do nicely for a while. I personally am buying the body only because I bought my Olympus with the kit lenses and I only use one of them. I wish I had asked as many questions then as I have no because I would have gone with a body only and bought a lens seperately.
