This is the only other photo I took during the week of the People challenge that I would have considered submitting. Unfortunately I seem to be the only one in my circle of friends that actually like this picture so I did the fisheye one instead.

Heh.... I think he was talking about the photo gallery on your web site (the link to which is in your signature).

Ah. Hahaha. Silly defensive me. Wasn't entirely clear, and this is probably not the right thread to discuss that but... yes they are.

Chariot, I LOVE that photo! It probably would have done really badly here, but wow, that's a great effect :) |

I actually like your submitted photo better. I gave it an eight.
I don't think I would've scored the other picture as high. The picture takes my eye to the little pizza dude doll hanging from the mic stand, the person appears to be a backdrop for it. Since the challenge was a people challenge and it's a doll I would've taken some marks off.
I do like the Patricia photo though, I think it would just be more appropriate in a different challenge.

chariot, the pic you submitted was one of the more interesting (to me) in the challenge. it was very cool. |

This was an "out-take" in the sense we decided not to set up an account and submit it this week. There's nothing done to it except re-sizing it to DPC specs.
Anyone care to contribute to a quick "straw poll" or comment?
Self-Portrait (not mine). |

Hehehehehe... Read my comment for the photo. Gotta stick to my guns, I didn't care for the color, but I did like the pose.
As for the outtakes...
I kinda like the first one (ch_green_hair2.jpg), but I think the one you submitted has a more interesting composition (seeing the whole body rather then just the upper body and face).
ch_green_hair3.jpg was basically the same as the one you submitted but I did not like the way her face came out under that light. I like the looking away better.
christinaH_0502_134.jpg seems too overexposed in the face and the window panes and the blinds on the left are a bit distracting. I do like bricks but I think for a beautiful model like that it detracts.
christinaH_0502_153.jpg same as above except for the over exposed.
christinaH_tonguering_pseudBW.jpg is cool. I probably would have liked it cropped just a bit more on the side and the bottom and then make the tongue ring a little more apparent without being distasteful. Good luck. :)
christinaH_0502_101.jpg - This one is kind of nice, but I'm not sure about the colors. She's wearing red and blue which is fine and then you throw in the brown wood of the armrest which is ok, but then you go out into left field aqua couch. :) Its a nice pose and I like the way she looks, but all the different colors mess it up for me.
Ok that might have been more than what you were looking for but... oh well that's me. :)

I basically agree with this assesment. For the outdoor shots against the brick, you really should consider B&W. Also, learn how to adjust highlight, shadow, and midpoint (gamma) in a program like PhotoImpact or Photoshope Elements (if you do not know how). It can help keep the highlight and shadow detail, but still have dramatic lighting. It works much better than the brightness and contrast adjustments.
Overall, good work, and fantastic girl.

thanks for the detailed commentary. I do appreciate it, much, even if it is coming from the one person who reviewed my picture that isn't into those 'goth', 'industrial', color schemes. :) .
Now I hope you take what I'm about to say without any rancor, as it is intended as nothing more than an objective analysis.
in another thread, you complained about mean or insensitive comments. yet your 'tagline' for your review of my photo was 'girl killed by vomit-colored dress'. That's pretty harsh, my friend. one might infer there's a bit of a double standard going on there. i would say, if you're going to dish it out, take it. or else don't dish it out :).

But magnetic...vomit IS a new color scheme. You are so out of touch with the latest designer fashion colors!!
I''m not a goth/industrial/whatever person and I liked the color scheme. My only thing about the color is I wanted to see that cool hair writhing around on the floor better and the color was a bit obscuring. Of course that may have been your intention.
...........I still wanted to see that hair writhing around on the floor better :-P But you were still one of my top 7 photos last week.

Magnetic, I think in most of those photos the girl is putting on a 'sexy' look, which doesn't work as well as the more natural expression she had in the photo you submitted. I think you chose the right one. |

lol, hokie. yeah i responded to your post-contest comment on my pic page, dunno if you saw that.
you may actually be right: there is actually a line of makeup called 'Urban Decay', with colors that have names like 'putrefaction', 'cyanide chic', 'decadent morbidity', and 'blood rust'.
somehow, though, i don't think that's the way chariot meant it ;).
lisae, thanks for the comments - i liked the detached and distant look in the one I chose and the only one I might have submitted instead was the second one in my link where she's the same setup but looking at the camera.
however, if i was interested in 'placing', I might have done better with one of the more conventional 'sexy' images.

I apologize if that statement upset you in any way. It was not meant as an attack on you. I should have added a ;) after the comment because it was really meant more as a joke illustrating that I did not like the colors. I really didn''t think there was a double standard there as the comments I pointed out where made directly about a person where my comments were more an illustration of the colors. But again, I apologize if I came across the wrong way.
As for the color schemes being Goth... I''ve never had any schooling in photography or colors, but I never thought of green and red as goth. When I think goth I usually think of black, white and maybe some red. I''ve never thought of industrial as colors. If you have any links to any pages that talk about themes and colors I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks. :)

i don't know if it's 'officially' goth or 'officially' industrial. i dont know if there's a 'style guide' for such. that's why I put those words into quotes, meaning them more as just a shorthand way of referring to the esthetic my picture might fall into.
however, a number of people characterized it as such and made reference to peopel they knew that were into the Cure and that kind of imagery, so it must have struck some kind of chord in that wavelength, even though it wasnt necessarily intended as such.
as for me, all I know what i see people wearing, and favoring: black, of course, as well as vintage clothing, and designers such as hot topic, bebe, and betsy johnson. i just wanted something dreamy, sensual, and slightly surreal, but still elegant.
believe me, i know not everyone has, or even wants, the same taste. i've shown that picture to people who only like blue shirts and khaki's and they've said 'ok, that's weird.' that's fine with me. i would rather submit something slightly unconventional that fit in with my ideal of artistic expression, even if it didn't win, than try to consciously cater to mass appeal : ) ..
still, here's an interesting link, that i in no way endorse : goth fashion faq. apparently goth fashion includes vintage and historical clothing now ... |

I thought goth was about sub-culture, or some shite like that. Isn't a "Goth fashion faq" sorta, we'll ..taking it into realm of the Britney Spears, N'Sync pop culture trivialisation? :-)
That's alway's the way it is...stuff starts out anti-social and turns into this weeks people magazine topic. |
