This is the third year in a row I have had to reapply for my job due to redundancies. Today I was told the new company structure and to my horror saw that my current role has been upgraded to the grade above mine (so I can't reapply for my current position). So, I now need to apply for roles I don't have much experience in and as 1/3rd of us are going my prospects look bleak.
Now, the good news, this gives me an opportunity to diversify. I'm a great beliver that you don't need to be the best photographer to make make money at this game (no offence to pro's btw) so came to you lot for some pointers as to how to start my own fotog business (was thinking general photography).
Any of you guys/gals have bookmarks/tips/stories you'd like to share?
Thanks,
Andi

No stories, tips or bookmarks from me...but then no intention of turning into a pro either ;o)
However, I'd like to say I am very proud of you for welcoming this new challenge rather than getting lost in the craziness! Whatever you turn your hand to I know you'll give 110% and have no doubt you can make a couple of quid here and there taking snaps ;o)
Now I've done all the ego boosting the DPC guys need to step in here and give you some pointers ;o)

Most new businesses fail in the first two years and if you don't have enough money to live on for one year without any income, do not start a new business.
That is the best advice you can receive.
I would do things in this order - 1) 100% concentration on securing another job for steady income then 2) start investigating starting your business. |

Yes, just what I was thinking. Have only been here 6 years and am looking at 6 months salary tax free (equates to about £17.5k). I'm told 3rd December if I still have a job, the new 'regime' starts 1st Jan and I'd leave mid March (not sure what they expect me to do Jan-March but I won't be skills transferring!).
So, I have quite a lot of time to look for 'real' work and was thinking of pimping myself for part time fotog work in the interim.
