I wonder if any of you have purchased through Macmall?
I am planning on getting a high end mac desktop for work, but I was thinking wanted to get a laptop first with Parallels and the new Leopard system just to make sure I can transition my work easily (from the PC).
I got this deal in the mail today, and it seems pretty good compared to Apples prices. My question is whether anyone's bought from MacMall before? Their resellerratings.com ratings are scaring me away. If not, who to do business with?
//www.resellerratings.com/store/MacMall
They only have a Lifetime Rating: 3.25 / 10 (6 month rating 3.75 with 16 reviews).
The deal was 3% off, and then rebates. System includes Leopard.
Apple - 13.3" MACBOOK INTEL CORE 2 DUO 2.16GHZ, 1GB MEMORY, 120GB HARD DRIVE, SUPERDRIVE - WHITE
Your Price: $1,255.18
Mail-In Rebate(s): $75.00
Net Price: $1,180.18
So if not them, who? |

Refurb section of the Apple store online, bottom right corner of the main store page. I bought a refurbed Macbook there this week and have had lots of customers purchase stuff through there as well. In fact my 23" Cinema Display from 2 yrs ago is a refurb.
You get the bigger discount, the original warranty--usually it's an "open box return" where someone opted for a bigger or smaller unit within their 10 day policy. The returns go back to TX where they're checked packed as original.
The only thing to look out for is the processor type and speed to make sure it's current, shipping models rather than an older generation, of course the biggest discounts are on the older one.
So mine was 1099 for the middle model with 120 gb HDD and a gig of RAM.
It will include Leopard, they always put the latest/greatest in, recently that was iLife '08 inserted before shipping though it had to be installed. |

| Wait a bit. New MacBook models are supposedly due out any day now. |

Thanks. What if the refurb has dead pixels or something? Can you exchange a refurb? (And can it be done at the store to avoid shipping charges?)
I did find it on PC Connection, not quite as cheap, and they have a slightly better rating 5/10.
Six-Month Rating: 4.83 / 10
Six-Month Reviews: 15
Lifetime Reviews: 174
Lifetime Rating: 7.53 / 10 All Store
I can get it at the Apple store refurbed for slightly less ($1099), but for comparison, the Apple Store's rating is:
Six-Month Rating: 5.00 / 10
Six-Month Reviews: 2
Lifetime Reviews: 71
Lifetime Rating: 6.09 / 10 All Stores Avg.: 7.57

Ok, sage advice as usual! Seems Apple is always making me wait. :) |

FWIW, I've ordered TONS of equipment from both MacMall and PC/MacConnection over the course of many years. MaConnection is awesome, and I would rate MacMall as "good." MacConnection's ground shipping will be much faster for you since they're based in NH (you can even order at midnight and it'll still ship that day). Note that MacMall, ClubMac and eCost are all the same company, yet ClubMac seems to have much better service than the other two (same prices). I've also bought many refurbs from Apple, and the only problems I've ever had with them involved laptops. It's more a nuisance than anything since they're covered by the same warranty as a new Mac.
The main reason I suggest waiting is that the MacBook uses Intel GMA950 graphics (slow) to drive the display. Apple should be updating to a chipset with much better performance soon (within a week I'd guess).

| I dont know if its worth it. I rarely find brand new macs for sale that are cheaper than what the apple site has to offer. My opinion is to fork out the extra few bucks and get it from the apple site. I have had nothing but good service from apple and they may not offer the same if you purchase it through a third party. |

Updated Macbooks, as promised. ;-)
Important note: Do NOT order RAM from the Apple store! They want $850 for 4GB that would cost you less than $160 shipped elsewhere. Yikes!
