Hey all,
I have a friend who is looking for a non SLR camera (vacation photo's, family stuff, etc). The following are some criteria he is looking for in no particular order:
1. ease of use to take decent pictures
2. AA battery powered
3. good video mode (limited only by memory capacity and ideally with ability to zoom during video)
4. robustness (tends to be a little rough on things)
5. decent zoom
6. <$500
7. decent low light capability
Thanks in advance for your feedback. Going to do some research after work but thought i would post here to get it started and maybe get a direction as to company's/models to narrow search down a bit:) It's been a long time since I have looked at point and shoot type cameras so not sure what is good or not on the market at the moment.
Many thanks in advance.
Danny

Olympus makes some pretty durable p and s cameras. , Canon, Sony and Fuji would also be brands to check out. Nikon doesn't have much decent to offer.
I think a place like Best Buy or Circuit City would be a good place to start the hunt. Nothing beats hands on shopping. You will probably get a big handful of suggestions here and a few more people will second those suggestions. But like I said, Going to the store and playing with the demo models will give your friend a much better idea of what camera to get.

| 6 and 7 don't go together. In fact 7 doesn't go in this list at all. |

Agreed that low light is hard/impossible from a point and shoot camera, but certain brands/models are better in 'lower' light then others. Its a factor to consider

I love my Canon A620!
I carry it all the time. |

I agree about low-light (and fast shutter) being almost impossible with non-dSLR cameras.
The Canon S3 or the newer S5 are very versatile otherwise, and can shift into movie mode by hitting one button. They are not exactly a "pocket" camera though. |

Yeah, the s3 is what came to mind as well but i am biased towards canon :) and that might be a little more then is needed. Not sure if others out there are a little better from a price/feature type standpoint.
Not looking at which takes the absolute best quality pictures but more of a well rounded one. One of the cams he mentioned was the kodak z812is if that helps give an idea.
