When shooting action sports with a vertical grip in vertical position, which IS mode should I generally be using?

When I shoot horizontal action sports, I normally use Mode 2. However, I don't believe the lens knows that I'm in vertical mode and that Mode 2 should be switched 90 degrees. Is that a correct assumption?

Equipment used: Canon EOS 40D, Canon 70-300 IS USM, Opteka Vertical Grip.

Thanks in advance!

I realize that, but does the lens know what orientation I'm in while panning? If not, then if I'm in vertical orientation, the Mode 2 setting would be if I'm panning up-and-down. Unfortunately, I don't pan up and down that much. :-(

Alright, someone over in the Canon forum said that,

"...it doesn't care which end's up, but damps out the lesser of the two directions of motion."

Hopefully he is correct. :-)
