Let me start by saying I̢۪m not digging for comments, but looking for honest answers. Yesterday I went to the AC-Delco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals. I have 6 gigs of shots like these, and absolutely disappointed with all of them.
I feel I am failing to portray the feeling of power that resonates in a event such as this. Oh hell, what I'm looking for is help to make snapshots like these, into something that might be a decent motor sports picture.

PP is simple, converted raw to 8 bit tiff using Digital Photography Pro. ( Canon software). Noise Ninja, auto profiled (to help with high, 1600 ISO). Saturation, resize, sharpen, and save for the web in Elements 4.

At the event: Bigger zoom. Slower shutter speeds (pan with the movement).

In post: Greater contrast. Local Contrast USM (not sure if Elements can do this). Basically, use USM to sharpen the image but select a very low amount but with a very wide radius (say 10% at 60 pixels ... play with it).

Just some ideas.

The first suggestion for getting what you are asking for is something that might not be possible for you....Get a lot closer and use a wide angle lens.

There is nothing like using a wide angle lens on subjects like this that give the viewer the feel of actually being there and in the action. The perspective, instead of zooming and/or cropping, is what makes all the difference.

edit to add: Notice how close the photogs in your images are. They are right on top of the action. Getting in there, however, would be difficult if you are not recognized as a pro. Even then, not all pros will be granted access.
