Ok I am really trying to teach myself photoshop, please see my original and my edits. Let me know what you think. Did I do to much to the photo or not enough? Is it a photo you would not have bothered to edit to begin with? Thank you for your honesty in advance!

To be very honest, it looks like you went overboard with the contrast/saturation. I'm not sure this is the best original to start with... it might be better to start with something a little less busy/better composed. |

It's a great dog and the original seemed a lot better. There are fundemental issues with the shot
First the person in the background really distracts and makes this one seem like a snapshot. Getting the person off to the side so you can get down at eye level with the dog to take the picture would really work better. Most of the time, taking a picture at 5 to 6 feet off the ground is about the worst perspective for interest.
Second - there is a great deal of sidewalk etc that really doesn't add a lot to the shot. It is a great dog - the lighting wasn't too bad- except for the blown out section - put the dog in the shade and you have something. Focusing on the face and making sure the background is clean and does not have a great deal of distraction would really help.
Your edit itself makes the image seem dingy and the colors are extremely oversatured (the grass is too green)
I hope this helps |

not really bad but you should practice on a shot that doesn't have blown out highlights to begin with. |
