I'm trying to find where the White Balance temperature value (K) is stored when shooting Auto WB. I can't see it in the EXIF, but it seems to be getting picked up by the RAW converter. There is a 'White Balance' entry in the EXIF, but this just shows the setting as 'Auto' or 'Cloudy', not the actual K temperature.

Is the WB Kelvin value actually stored somewhere in the file?

Nikon "encrypts" their WB setting. If your RAW converter understands it, you're either using one written by Nikon, or one of a couple of third-party converters that are able to decipher it.
