Just when I thought camera manufacturers had run out of ideas, Sony comes up with this;
//www.dpreview.com/news/0710/07102401sonyt2.asp
"Sony̢۪s distinctive 'smile shutter' function makes capturing informal portraits and family snapshots effortless. The function automatically detects and captures a person smiling without the need to press the shutter. If there are several people in the frame, you can select the primary subject for the camera to watch by touching the screen. A sequence of up to six smiling shots can be taken without the need to manually press the shutter."
And here's a USA Today review of the 'smile shutter' feature;
Sony's 'smile shutter' might make you grimace |

Oh my !@#$ing god. That's just ridiculous.
Love how it goes up to ISO 3200, and has a tiny, slow internal lens that probably gives it abysmal quality.
I swear the point and shoot cameras don't get any better. When they put faster computer chips in them, they invent some stupid interface feature to keep it at the level of cameras from 8 years ago. When they make improvements in sensor design, they cram more pixels in to keep the image quality down. |

Why is everyone mad that Sony came up with this feature? I mean I'm sure it's something you can turn on or off and it makes it much easier for people that don't know how to take pictures well. Don't get me wrong I will NEVER buy another Sony product but I think it's kinda neat that Sony has come up with this. It just shows you that we are moving forward in the technology department. :)

who says people are mad about it? To me it's a bit of a silly feature, but yeah...people with no photographic skills might find it usefull.
Sony products are very OK, I still use my F828 occasionally :) |

I don't think a computer will ever replace a human ... and I certainly don't think "built in features" on a camera will ever replace the skills of a good photographer, BUT STILL! I think it's AMAZING how "smart" these cameras are becoming.
If you're just old enough to start having kids now ... imagine what the technology will be like when YOUR kids get around to using it!
