Are our scores kept confidential or if we make a comment, can the photographer tell what score we gave the shot?
I should clarify...are the scores we give others confiential (not the scores we recieve.)

Your comments are not confidential, but the rating is. |

No one can see what you score, however members who push the update button all the time can figure out what scores they are getting by doing simple math. If you know what score just came in at the same time as a comment... And yes, some of us are anal enough to check all the time. |

The only way someone know what score you gave them is if you post it with the comment.
I like to score all the shots and then go back during the week and drop comments and adjusts scores. If I give you a comment then sometimes your score won't change because I scored it earlier in the week. |

I do the same as faidoi.
Plus
Just because my comment isn't all glowing doesn't necessarily reflect a low score.

So, let me get this clear you do not have to comment when you vote, is that correct? Sorry if its a simple question but I am about to cast some votes for the first time and Im not sure I'm up to commenting yet.

I am about to begin voting myself and as a 'beginner' was worried that I may not have the technical knowledge to apply my votes correctly. However, I guess as long as I am consistent things will be ok??

Correct. You do not have to comment when you vote. However, you must vote on, I believe it's at least 20%, of the photos in a topic for the votes to count.

No, but you must vote on 20% in order for your votes to be counted. You will be notified on your voting page as well as your home page if you have not fulfilled this requirement. If there are too many images for you to vote on, try to vote on your first 20%.

You are both correct. Commenting is voluntary but encouraged. You will learn more about photography if you do comment -- simply say what you like and/or don't like in polite terms and everyone will be happy.
1=bad and 10=good, but beyond this it is up to you to decide where to rate each photo. Consistency in applying your voting is fair (and easiest!) -- significantly abberant voting patterns will be flagged and excluded.

Really, you shouldn't have to worry about that. I comment on photographs pretty consistently that are leagues above my level. I have noticed that people just appreciate your comments because you have taken the time to recognize your shot. I have also noticed that commenting or critiquing a shot will help you improve your photography as well. Even though I may not know much about photography, I do know that people enjoy a nice comment here and there and appreciate the time you take to do so.
But no, it is not required for you to leave comments, suggested, but not required.
Another note, commenting doesn't neccassarily have to be "critiquing" either.
