I'm working on a business name. I came up HeartLand(meaning Midwest) Imaging. My wife says it should be Heartland Photography. What's the difference between imaging and photography other than the spelling?

Imaging is quite a broad term inviting a myriad of interpretations. Photography, in comparison, is specific.

Hearland Imaging, to me, sounds like a medical center.

"Imaging" is what x-ray and MRI techs do, among other things. As Cindi points out, it sounds more medical than photographic. I suggest "HeartLand Photographics" if you want something different from "photography" in the name.

So does the term imaging apply more to the medical field suh as x-rays and MRI's?
Photography: the art or process of producing images on a sensitized surface (as a film) by the action of radiant energy and especially light
Imaging: the action or process of producing an image especially by means other than visible light.
ETA: Robert beat me to it.

Photographics:
1 : relating to, obtained by, or used in photography
2 : representing nature and human beings with the exactness of a photograph
3 : capable of retaining vivid impressions
This might work

I disagree. See CorelDraw... There's a lot of precedent for this and it is at least semi-distinctive.

I agree with Robert. Okay, so I'll ditch the imaging and go the traditional photography route. I'm keeping the Capital "L"

You should check with your local business registry and do some google searches to be sure the name you choose isn't already chosen. :)

HeartLand Imaging reminds me too much of the movie Small Soldiers.

Ironically, on CNN they just had a reporter talking about an unmanned plane that is flying around taking shots of the fires in Southern CA. In his report, he said something about the plane "taking pictures," then he corrected himself and said, "well, it's taking IMAGES," explaining that the camera has abilities to detect hotspots of the fire, essentially seeing through the smoke to find those.
So there you have it. A "photograph" is a literal representation of a scene, and an "image" shows you the hot spots :) |
