Anyone? What on earth is this thing?

Edit to add, the bug was about the size of a basic housefly.

Nah, you worded it right. We're just a bunch of know-nothing-comedians! But if we keep bumping this thread for you long enough, we're bound to attract somebody that knows the REAL answer! :-)

The larval stage of Harmonius Axyridis, a variety of ladybug, as Zanta said.

Yup, it pupates just like a moth or butterfly; it's basically a ladybug caterpillar :-) A very small one :-)

Thanks for identifying Fredatio!
Wow, a baby ladybug - my daughter's going to be really upset that we let it go - I'm just happy I didn't kill it, I don't think she would have ever forgiven me! |

it's not actually a 'real' lady bug. it's an asian derivitive that looks much like a indiginous lady bug. it's actually sort of an invasive species - introduced as a control for nuisance aphids.
these are the things you see in the fall. just before it gets cold - swarming around windows and doors. they are trying to find a warm place to winter.
oddly enough these bugs are pretty adept at judging both the on set of cold weather, and in the spring they seem to know when the last cold spell has ended...

Its a saphenous japanese shoulder eating bug; actually the larvae of the "papae inctus irregularis."
This bug wiped out the whole Bangkok Mango crop of 1883, leading to the "Fish Sauce Rebellion."
Not generally known for its attacks on humans, however, if provoked, will nip at human flesh causing severe necrotising of the surrounding skin. With this, come slow and painful death, similar to leprosy with commensurate societal shunning.
Good luck. |
