I know there have been a zillion of these threads, but I have read them all and still an uncertain. Yes I am a camera bag junkie, but still there are always reasons to buy more.

I am heading to Mexico soon on a trip with some really amazing photographers (yes they are going to let me go anyway â and more on who these folks are later) and will be taking a small amount of gear. Most likely all I will take is: Canon 40D body, 17-50mm, 70-200mm, 430EX flash. I also will be taking my tiny laptop.

Cannot take only the MiniTrekker backpack because of the laptop.

Cannot take the CompuRover because of the tiny planes we are taking and this thing just wonât squeeze under the seat or in the overhead.

When I went to Scotland I took the Velociy 7 and put it in the backpack with the computer because of the restrictions on carry-ons. Didnât like that arrangement though once there because it was impossible to carry both apart for each other.

Thinking about the backpack and the Nova 4 as both can be carried together and I can take two carry-ons. BUT â the Nova 4 is like carrying a small cooler as it is so blocky.

I live in a place where we have NO camera supply shops and everything I buy has to be purchased on-line. I can only see pictures of things on sites like cambags.com and this can lead to trouble when I get something and see how big or small it really is. I have spreadsheets of bags and there sizes and volumes, but it really doesnât help all that much.

I am looking for something to carry the above equipment along with my backpack so that I have the greatest amount of flexibility when I am there. I also want to be ready to hit the streets at a momentâs notice when these other photogs say we are âoutta hereâ. BTW one of these folks has this distinction: âHe has amassed more awards and decorations for his work than any other photographer, and his limited edition photographs and portfolios have received national and international acclaim.â

I have been looking into the following: Tamrac 5605, Tamrac 5606, Tamrac 5608, Tamrac 706, LowePro Rezo 190, LowePro SR D300, â¦

Any ideas or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Why don't you ask that guy then. Sounds like he is probably in a great position to tell you how best to pack.

UPDATE - and maybe the coolest bag ever.

I just bought a Kavu Bicoastal ($47) small, sort of messenger bag and modified it to my liking. It is not stiff like the Nova 4, rather a canvas type material on the outside. The canvas will not shed on the camera gear inside as the Domke F-3X does becuase the inside is lined with nylon. You can configure any way you like. Right now I have most of the dividers from the bottom of my CompuRover AW in there keeping everything seperated and secure. I will need to add some bottom protection, but this is awesome.

It doesn't look like a camera bag, it isn't like carrying a small cooler, I can configure any way I like, and there is this funky extra access zipper to the inside so just spinning it around slightly, lifting the flap and opening this funky zipper gives me instant access to the gear inside. Right now I have the Canon 40D with 17-50mm attached, the 70-200mm with hood in its case, the 430EX in its case, a couple ball bungies, Catcus triggers, polarizer, batter charger plus all the key little stuff in its own zippered area, in one of those great little diddy bags that come with the Lowepro bags. There are still places for phone, iPod, passport, wallet, etc. It is way lighter than the Nova 4, and can be carried along with my backpack for the flight, but stand alone while in the field.

I will let you know how it does traveling around Mexico, but right now it looks to be the perfect solution!

Amy other designation? I looked up Kavu Bicoastal and came up with vastly different bags - like at Amazon and at BackCountry and Alpine (looks like the one at Amazon).

No pix of the inside - what kind of padding inside?

I picked up an old Canon backpack that is cool - medium green canvas and leather things on it. On my walks, I take a gadget bag, but this Kava would be a lot better!

Update - found some on sale! 20 bucks.

Here is the Kavu bag: Bi-coastal

If I can get a chance soon I will post picks of my modifications as the Kavu page does not show the inside.
