I have an interview on Monday with a new studio opening up here. This would be my first actual photo job besides my own work. I'm super excited and nervous! I have no idea what type of money they're going to be paying. The ad said "wedding photographer". I looked at the website and they do all areas of "people" photography not just weddings. What do you guys think about this? What kind of money do you think they would be offering? I'm going to bring a cd with some of my work on it in case they want some samples. Anything else I should bring with me? Thanks alot!!! |

No clue as to what you should bring. But congrats on the interview! That's definately exciting! Definately bring the cd and some prints if possible. I don't think you'll get rich but you'll definately learn alot and have fun. Good luck!! |

Prints would be better as then they can see them right there and then and save them finding a pc and loading them up.
As for payment, I imagine the basic will be pretty low but they will probs throw in some commission depending on how well you do and how many of the prints the bride and groom want to buy (their families also).
But don't talk money at the interview unless they ask you then just say you want an amount that reflects your skill. You're not a mercenary but at the end of the day, you have rent and bills and everything else that goes with living in the western hemisphere. |

Yeah I'm not going to bring up the pay but I'm kinda hoping they will so I know what I'm working with. :) |

Art or camera stores have portfolio books. Since the studio concentrates on portraits, a book with prints of your very best portraits would be appropriate. I would try to have at least ten 8x10 or larger photographs all with the same orientation - portrait or landscape. |

24-hour prints from Wolf/Ritz camera would be adequate.
For a photographer, prints are part of your resume. It shows that you are prepared for the interview and job. |

Costco is your friend here. Get some 8x10's (or 8x12's) printed up for $1.49 each. Upload, order, and they're ready in an hour. They also sell a nice leather "scrapbook" there with 12x12 pages which works nicely for a quick portfolio. A two-pack of those is about $14.
edit: too late.

If you're serious about getting a job, make time. You'll only want about 15-20 prints of your best captures.

Would some of my landscape or wildlife shots be appropriate for my portfolio? I lost most of my portraits when my computer crashed a few months ago. All I really have is what is in my smugmug gallery. There are only a few portraits on there. |

You may consider interpreting "wanted: wedding photographer" as a search for a wedding photographer, not a portrait photographer, regardless of what other sort of work they do. Given that, outtakes from all your experience as a wedding photographer would certainly be benefical to landing the job.
