I can think of three scenarios for processing:
1) Blank wall, colors painted in. I'd think this would be DQable, but given the second-place winner of the last selective desat challenge, I'm not sure.
2) Visible shapes, colors painted "within the lines." I'd think this is utterly, completely legal.
3) Visible shapes, colors painted "crossing the lines." Not sure, based on discussions I've had with SC on shots like this one:
Discuss among yourselves. SC members, especially, please ring in!

I would be uncertain about the legality of changing the hue in processing to show different colour areas. Changing an item to one colour is allowed...but changing to show a range of different colours or patterns...that would probably be illegal.
This entry of mine was called up for validation. It was passed and did give the SC some concern over one area...but I suspect the initial call for validation was based on the tongue stripes.
These were painted prior to the photo being taken.
So try to do the rainbow painting before the photo rather than after. Maybe a range of different coloured lights shining on the subject would work.

Art once asked if a multi-colored Bichon would be legal and I remember he wass told no. You'd be adding an element that isn't there to start with. Color shifts are one thing... making a rainbow is another. I think it would fall along the lines of adding light rays, which has been deemed illegal several times.

And yet ... look at the selective desat second place. Do you think there were rectangular shapes in the sky?
Err ... lemme be clear I'm not trying to start trouble for or with the SC. I'm just wondering what the boundaries currently are. I know that one created some internal SC debate, so as always, I'm comfortable with "push the limit and you might fall over the edge."
But any guidance SC can give would be appreciated.

You know with all the controversy on DQs how the photo posted in this thread escaped it via it's validation is rather mindblowing don't you think? I remember saying to a fellow DPCer when that won a ribbon, that it was the 4th place finisher's lucky day.

I can't help but notice that's TWO humor posts from you without saying anything about the original question. Hmm. Maybe I should report them as off-topic.

Despite the rather significant lack of color at my current location, I'm gonna have to go with painting your own rainbow in post processing as DQ'able. I think the challenge is to "capture" not "create" a rainbow. Now the definition of "rainbow" for the sake of the challenge does leave some latitude (in my feeble mind, anyway), so I'd suggest being more creative in your capture than in your post processing. Think anyone will buy a rainbow in beige, by chance?? :-) |

Is it really that colourless where you're now? Does it look a bit like the pictures in Lawrence of Arabia? I always loved those shots in that movie, the wide, wide pictures of beautiful beige desert with all that fantastic blue sky! And the little black dots and sometimes a bit of yellow. Soooo beautiful! But I guess not rainbow.
You could always use a CD and shine it on something metal reflecting a beautiful desert scene. Or something like that. |

Heh! :-)
I will note that the dumpsters are either blue or green, so there's color (or colour, if you prefer) in spots.

Umm.... while this may not be the garden spot of the world, I'm thinking Leavenworth, Kansas isn't either. Though they do have the whole free food there, too.... lemme think on it a bit... |

It's quite amazing, Deb, that you can find such beauty in any place. Very different than your images from Germany, but really quite striking in their own way. Wow. |

When I saw the challenge, I immediately thought of this lovely shot by ericwoo at the last GTG:
I think there are rainbow colours in a myriad of places, we just need to look for them...
I do think painting in a rainbow or doing the colour stripe bend PP thing to add one would be a DQable offence in this situation though. The first image posted here was for a selective desat challenge, that effect was obtained using a different shaped brush and was totally acceptable for that challenge IMO. |

it would be great if we could just use our old rainbow pictures, just for this one challenge.
any idea how to make one? would flash split through a prism make a rainbow? |
