Thanks. Hope to get myself involved in a few more challenges... a little rusty with a camera. New to digital all together. Just hope to have some fun and maybe improve my technique along the way.

I see some very good pics, and a few really bad ones. One common thing i see, and do not like, is all the dark, particulalry dark b&w pics. Some are done well, proving a mood can be done with light without having a black underexposed mess. At first i thought is was me or my monitor, but I have concluded it is the pictures themselves!

well i hope i am not one of those in your 'black mess' catagory... how many in your opinion are there.. perhaps i will have to wait until the challenge is over to find out.. but feel free to leave some comments on that you think it is too dark.. and i can see if i get one.

There are some fantastic photos, I voted about 20 quite high and was pretty impressed with those top photos. Although I'm thinking [judging by comments] that people are confused in voting...the challenge is to take something than can be found in a garage and make it into art..hence Garage Art. That leaves the imagination pretty much wide open, let's not try and close the open minded thinkers..I want to encourage everyone to be a free-thinker and open Pandora's Box if the occasion arises ;-)
Best of luck to everyone!

I agree there are some excellent photos done for the challenge. I'm glad I was lurking for awhile before I entered this challenge (my first). By getting a feel for how the scoring runs, I'm very pleased with how my first one is doing. The comments have been helpful, although no negatives yet (Not that I WANT negative....I guess I had just prepared myself for some real critics.)
I also finally got up the nerve to add some of my own comments. I had voted before without commenting. I sure don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but we're here for feedback, right? So I jumped right in just like I really knew what I was doing LOL.

I don't think we are supposed to comment on specific pics during a voting period...so i will restrain myself. This is the first challenge that i have seen so many dark pics. Garages are dark places, so perhaps the original shots were underexposed, or the winter weather has everyone in a dark mood. Like most things, moderation is a good thing. A few dark pics are moody or pic a feeling. When i see 10 or more, then I begin to wonder.

On voting...how does one weight their vote...
-does it fit the subject?
-technical ability (in focus, lighting, editing, etc)
-artistic - composition, cropping, angle, lighting etc
-initial impression - like or dislike upon first seeing it.
Any thoughts? |

Not only that, but the challenge rules said it didn't have to shot in a garage..it's open to interpretation obviously..and around here the more obvious you make the pic fit the challenge - the better off you are. Or so it seems. |

I disagree. Garage Art is the time to that people that every shoots Still Life (even in Road Signs) to make real art.
Well, what we saw? Many garages! Oh, this garages aren´t decorated or specially painted. Obvious that is not Garage Art. Are only garages. And garages don´t meet the challenge! I never give so many low scores as now. Not only by the garages itself but many pictures are taken with strange things and are visually bad. In some cases, I lost 5 minutes looking to that... to give a 4. I´m wating my time in this challenge.
Oh, yeah, almost forget the water drops. In every challenge someone try to shoot water drops. I can´t see more this drops. Please...

hi again.
yeah i didn't mean make the comments on this thread, i meant go to the image in the challenge and leave comments there.. so the poeple whose pictures are too dark in your opinion know it... and if one of them is me.. i will secretly know it.

To the Photo experts:
I writing this in response to some of the posts in this thread. First, let me start off by saying that I'm not very good with a camera in my hands. No really. I have false beliefs when it comes to this. My wife bought me my camera for Christmas to get me out of her hair(long story). Second, and the reason for this post, I have a question about art. What is it? I mean what is considered art? I've read a lot of threads in this forum and still have not found the answer. It seems to me that maybe some of the people in this thread might be able to answer this question for me. I mean, can't a garage in it's self not be considered art, or what about maybe just part of that garage at the right angle? Is art what the person viewing the picture see or what the person taking the picture saw? "One man's junk is another man's treasure" I ask this question because I not sure what is a good photo versus an average one. I found this site by per luck and I'm glad I did. I enter the photo challenge's not to win any prizes but to see what people think of my pictures and to hopefully get so tips on how to improve my shots. For the last few challenges I have submitted some pictures hoping to get some feed back. I must say, the response has been great, thank you DPC Critique Club. But with this last challenge and comments, I must ask the question what is art? If you don't know by now, my submition was of . I did not purchase this, but I sure the man who bought it and put it up there thought it was art. And I'm pretty sure the guy who created it thought so too. But what this garage art? I don't know. But what makes a paint can or a couple of screws art? Is it because these are things normally found in a garage? I don't have either in mine. Is it becuase it's inside not outside or on top of? Two days ago while driving with my family I saw a toilet planter in someone's front lawn. Diffently not my cup of tea, but who's to say it's not art. (You might see it in a future submition)This is why I asked the question what is art. I didn't write this as a personel attack towards any so if it came across that way I'm sorry. I just wanted to know what art is in the eyes of the photo experts. And last, to the person who wrote 'Why you shoot something that don´t meet the challenge' I am surely sorry for wasting you all so imortant time, It will not happen again because the next time I will make sure I read the indepth challenge details more carefully. That was personal.
P.S. My wife likes my photos

I really liked myself [shhhh people get upset when it gets out we're discussing a photo currently up for voting]. Cainn, art is whatever you feel it to be. People can write a thousand critiques and a thousand answers, and never say what it is you feel in your heart. Art professors, teachers, anyone can tell you their own view, but that doesn't have to be YOUR view and rarely will it be. You love your photos, your wife loves them, what more in your creative life do you need? Can't wait to see your toilet pic
:-)

I'mnot sure there was anything super special about this challenge. Like most, there are nice ones & not so nice ones. Nothing that made me say wow. true dogs & cats are missing but the other regular shots made it in. Oh well!
certainly there are a few that were really nice, creative and/or really shot well but it's NG challenge, IMO.
BYW, I had high hopes for my first ribbon in this challenge but my scores have dramatically plummeted since yesterday! CURSES!

WHAT IS ART??
well.. after pondering that for a few years... (studying at at university) ... i think art is definatly something different to everyone... so of course you have to make up your own mind. and of course there is going to bad and good art. just like cookies... what is a cookie.. well is a oreo a cookie.. sure.. is it good.. perhaps... or is a fig nutten a cookie... well... i say its a square..some might say a cookie... anyhow.. you get the point.
But i think art to ME is where you are saying something visually.. you have a point. So a kids drawing is not 'art'... it is a drawing. and some peoples pictures aren't 'art' they are pictures... and some people only mean them to be as pictures... some mean them to be art.. some want to say something, or create something.. and some just want a picture. I think good art .. is made by someone trying to say something, and saying it in a way that makes me think, or makes me stop, or communicates in some way what they were trying to say. and not that they have to say something deep... it could just be a study on repetition, or lines... that is pleasing to the eye.. ... . .ok i'll stop there.

I think my image is pretty "Arty". But I have had comments saying Great 10, to Not relevant for the challenge, which surprises me. But I guess it is because different people have different things in their garage. I guess the only common factor would be a car. Everything else can be stored in different places depending on how much space you have.
As mentioned above, I have also experienced a dramatic points drop during this challenge. On day 1 I was at 6.5. But dropped to 5.9 by today. Grrrr! |
