LOL sorry but I just had to share, for those of you that don't know, long story short me and my camera spent a few min submerged in a glacier fed river a couple weeks ago. My Canon 400D and my 17-40mm F4L had been completely submerged for a good 2min. Anyway the camera kinda survived but only works intermittently and I had send the lens off to Canon for repair. Ends up they called and said nothing could be done and they recommended me buying a new lens from them. I said no thanks and for them to send the lens back.
Well I got it back a week and a half after I sent it in on Friday night and it still had water in it which lead me to believe that they mite not have touched it at all. So I figured what the heck, if its buggered already then why not take it apart and see whats toast inside. So after a couple hours of remove a few screws shoot it, clean it, and continue till I had it all apart...

Well I got all excited till I got to lenses 3 and 4 in the above pic, as they are two sealed groups and there was moisture in between the lenses, I kinda lost all hope on my attempt to salvage the lens and was considering saying good buy to it, so I left it for the night and went to bed. I got up the next am to gather the remains together and looked at the lenses again and low and behold all the moisture was GONE, this I thought was awesome, now I had to remember how to get the darn thing back together for which I was sweating bullets even with taking pics of the disassembly. Anyway I got it all back together not expecting anything to really work on it and hooked it up to the XTi, no way was I putting it on the 2 day old 40D :) anyway I fired up the camera, it was working for the moment, put my eye to the viewfinder and holy fuzzy, I hesitantly pressed down on the shutter button and OMG it focused. I started zooming on different objects and OMG its actually working!!
Anyway I took it to the zoo today for some "test" shots on the 40D and DAM I think I actually fixed it, it seems to be working GREAT but only time will tell but for the moment I managed to save myself $900 :D :D
Sorry for the long post but I'm just way to excited to have my favorite lens back working :) below is a pic I took earlier today straight out of the box with NO editing what so ever other than resize and save to JPG I left the exif in tact for sh!ts and giggles :)

see id send a letter(paper one not email:P) back to canon and telling them how bad service they had, explaining after you took the lens apart and allowed it to dry completly, you put it back together and it worked again, after they said it was unrecoverable. you might just might get a little discount card or something in return from them:) mabey even a job:P |

Fantastic news Dave... Nice to see that this worked out for you, and congrats on the image, it is indeed very nice.
I echo the comments made that you should send a letter to Canon, informing them of the fact that there was still water in the unit which tends to indicate that very little if anything was done by the technician that looked at it.
Have a great day, and happy shooting

That's a personal triumpth for sure. Your luck is getting much better it seems, and you did all that with the busted wrist too? How cool is that?
I know the feeling of making broken things go again. It's a good feeling for sure. Thanks for sharing some good news. While you are on a roll, maybe you should take a look at that wrist with your tool kit LOL.

Well on the serious side I can see why this lens costs what it does just by the engineering of the internal workings, good thing I took a few pics when I was taking it apart as even with laying it out the way I took it apart it was still a bitch as there are a crapload of moving parts in that thing...
