"Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the states of Kansas, Kentucky, North Dakota, or Washington are subject to tax."

Well that stinks. I had an order all ready to go this morning and when I saw Tax $76, I swore and then closed up the window to nurse my wounds :)

I guess they have warehouses in those states. If it makes you feel any better, I get hit with sales tax when I order from DPCPrints.

I never paid sales tax before so I think Kansas is on a "get revenue from the Net" kick.

Time to move to Vancouver. I am trying to talk my mother into it :)

Amazon has always charged tax in WA at least. It's due to the fact they have headquarters here.

Amazon sales out of a lot of states because they are selling stuff for other people. It could be one or more of the items you bought was coming from your state and they were charging tax on the whole order.

There are other sources of online markets so you might be able to find the same stuff elsewhere. We might pay in other ways, but at least here in Oregon we don't have a sales tax yet. Now if we could just pump our own gas...

I think it actually IS that there is a warehouse in Kansas. I think it's near Pittsburgh. If anything, they've simply changed the laws from corporate office to having to charge tax if you operate anything of your business in the state.
