My wife bought me a second hand 30d and I'm trying to get to grips with it, studying the manual, taking test shots, so a question for users of that and similar camera - what are your usual settings ? Do you use spot metering mostly or just for special occasions ? Auto WB or the selectable wb settings ?

I use the larger version of spot metering. I forget the name, but I think it meters the entire circle in the viewfinder, instead of just the tiny spot.

For WB, I'll use Auto in settings that I have a hard time defining, but usually select the correct one myself. I keep it on Cloudy a lot when I'm doing nature work, as it warms the images slightly.

In the Custom Functions, in the Menu, I use the Noise Reduction a lot, mainly when I'm do astrophotography or night work. It makes a huge difference, although it greatly slows shooting, since it has to process for an amount of time equal to the exposure - so a 15min shot takes another 15min before the camera can shoot again.

I shoot always in either full Manual, or Av. I juggle ISO and aperture/shutter speed settings as needed.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for that - I'm gonna bump this once cos I am really curious about it - especially the WB and metering settings. i'm thinking about the usual settings, not for special circumstances, just for being out and about carrying the camera. Spot metering and auto WB seems like a good plan - any reasons against ?
