PPI is meaningless in digital terms. All that matters is the total NUMBER of pixels. "72 DPI" is an instruction for printing, saying "when you print this, print at the scale of 72 pixels per inch."

An image that measures 7,200 pixels wide, printed at 72 dpi would be 100 inches wide. Exact same image printed at 720 dpi would be 10 inches wide. The files would be identical, the only difference is the printing resolution.

when i check image size it says its 72 pixels / inch but the print res. is 300 pixels/inch i seem to be having a problem when i save for web that i lose sharpness in my pics and am trying to figure out why thought mabe this was the problem

You're probably losing sharpness because you're saving for web at a low quality- a big file that's scaled down to 150 k will lose a lot of image quality. Printing resolution should not affect it at all.

Because your camera is taking a large jpg image at 72 dpi. You can change the resolution of your image, but it will make your image size smaller. You can change the resolution in the Image Size by turning off the Resample Image which will link your Width, Height, and Resolution. Then when you change the resolution to 150dpi or 300dpi your picture will adjust to the correct size.

For example one of my images is 53.778" x 36" at 72dpi. when i adjust the resolution to 150dpi my image size changes to 25.813" x 17.28" and if i change the resolution to 300dpi the size changes to 12.907" x 8.64". I hope this helps.

select constrain proportions first, set dpi to 300, then select size either5x7 or 8x10 whatever you want to print then click save as button and choose quality 12 maximum. hopes this helps. psart
