.....you should check out the Canon 135 F2.0L. I've recently replaced my 85 F1.8 lens with this lens. I felt the 85 was too short on my 1 Series camera, so I replaced it. And man am I one happy camper. For those of you with FF or 1.3 crop factor cameras. If you havent checked out this lens its worth a look. Here are a few examples that I have taken in the past week, many just today.

Most of these are at 2.5 or less. I'm thinking I made a good move. OK back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Nice shots!
It's probably my next lens.
I recently got the 28 1.8 and love it. I am falling in love with fast primes!
This is the only one i have online at the moment from it.

The 135/2 is definitely my next lens purchase. It is by all accounts an incredible lens. It reportedly is capable of focusing stars to 10 micron spots over the entire 35mm frame, something no other lens other than a couple of the super-teles can do. It's a relative bargain too! |

I concur. It's one of the nicest Canon lenses available and spit spot sharp. One of the nicest lenses for creative work. It leaves even the better Canon zooms in the dust.

Hmmm, what does one of those cost? I am renting a Canon 85mm 1.2 L and have been experimenting with it and I am also getting hooked on fast primes.
What would be my decision criteria to choose between the 85mm1.2 and 135 2.0 (assuming a <$2k budget)?

focus speed is one - the 85 1.2 is slow.
there is 50mm difference in focal length too. and the 135 is HALF the price. the 85 1.8 is great and $400 or less used.
I think the 85 1.2 is more than $2000. Some folks find it's dof too shallow when wide open.

Fixed focal length lenses with the widest aperture f/2.0 or wider.

I just bought this lens on FM second hand for $735 to my door. Its an amazing lens. Focus speed isnt even close between the 2 lens either, the 135 will focus as fast as any lens Canon makes(or so I am told) I know it will beat my 70-200 and is very, very close to the 300 F2.8 I used.

Thanks for the comments and the views everyone, I had rented one of these lens before and found it to be nice, but I never really spent some time with it to get to know it. Now that I own one, I cant put it down. I'm going to work it out all day tomorrow at a volleyball tournament. I had no idea that I could shoot and enjoy a fixed focal length so much, its a pleasant surprise for me.

I'm with the prof on this one. The 85mm f/1.8 is a serious peice of work. I almost bought one for about $350, but I'm pretty happy with my 50mm f/1.4 for now.
The 135 f/2 and the 85mm f/1.8 would probably be an excellent pair to have in the bag. If renting is cost effective and an easy option, why not rent those two for a week too... |
