I need to buy about 10-13 digital cameras for my high school art department. We will be using them for a variety of assignments... digital photography with photoshop projects as well as stop motion animation.
Right now we have some Canon SD600 point and shoots that work pretty well and I also have an Canon A630.
I'd like to keep the price under/around $300 per camera and also get cameras that have rechargable lithium batteries vs. AA/AAA batteries. We won't be spending money on a DSLR this year, so that is out of the question. Essentially I want to get a number of standard point and shoots that will produce quality images and maybe 2-3 that have more control (aperture shutter speed changes) for my more advanced students. I have personally a Canon G6 that works well for that, and the A630 is decent but uses AAs.

Recommendations? If you were me--what would you want? Where would you shop?

They don't have to be Canons thats just what I have now.

Thanks!

Depends where you are located. If, for instance, you were in NYC then a trip to B&H with some paperwork would probably yield a discount and a nice deal with good warranty and easy return. But you're probably somewhere else. The Canon A540 does give control of ap tv etc.

Our highschool uses Canon 350s, but I think they only have 5 or 6 of them.

since your doing this for school, the seminew olympus SW720, sw770, or sw790 would be a great choice, they are about 260 for the 720 and up for the others each and are virtualy insistructable, they can go into five feet of water, be dropped from like 10 feet or something, and still work like new, if the kids you have in your class are rough with them, this way you know they will last long

the build is very good like he said, but the images unless they were taken outdoors in daylight are quite noisy... but maybe the quality in this situation doesn't matter that muhc
