I have a nikon 18-55mm lens right now. I am debating whether I should add a Nikon 55-200mm VR lens or to sale the 18-55mm and buy the Nikon 18-135mm. Either of the choices will cost me only about $230.
I must have quick and quiet focusing with decent optics.
I am asking for other opinions and any advice. Any experience with any of the lenses?
Thanks

read some reviews on them both over at photozone:

Photozone

They have a very comprehensive reviews section.

I have look at Photozone, but I am asking for individual reviews. From owners of these lenses in real world usage.
With the 55-200mm VR, I am most concern with the slower AF that many reviewers have indicated.

For 230 bucks, you arent going to find many lenses that have snappy focus...

Every zoom lens in that price range is pretty slow focusing. The 18-70 is probably the best of the bunch, but I think you want more reach than that.

I think what you're really looking for is something like the 18-200 VR, it has the qualities you want. But that's a $750 lens, and it definitely won't withstand being hit with a paintball.

One of the things that makes the cheap zooms hard to live with is that they don't focus well in low light. You might consider getting the 18-135, and backing it up with a 50mm f/1.8. Use the 18-135 when the light is good, and use the 50 indoors and in low light situations.
