Careful of this scam with buying prints

Hey yall

I had a guy try to pull a scam on me buying prints. He didn't succeed because I'm aware of this type of thing, but it would be really easy to get screwed over and I would hate to see it happen to anyone here.

I sell a lot of prints over my website, and this guy ordered about $1000 worth of stuff. He then sent way too much money to my house in Money Mart checks. Being an honest dude, I e-mailed him back and told him that the amount ($5700) was way too much.

He said then to keep my amount, and send him back the rest through a transfer. Pfft, yeah right. I was in New York doing some business stuff so I told him he'd have to wait. I investigated his checks before doing anything and found out that they were actually counterfit and just after this, the checks were recognized as fakes by my main bank branch and taken out of my account.

So basically if he succeeded, he would have made the money I sent him before I noticed the checks expiring.

I can never understand how anyone falls for this one. It's just such a strange thing to do that I'd think it would trigger alarm bells instantely.

I've deal with a lot of checks and do not have many problems.

and

I found out that usually these people route checks through to Nigeria, and then back to the United States. This makes it impossible to track, so don't assume all the internet scams are coming from Nigeria

I didn't assume that all scams of this type are FROM Nigeria, but just that it is the MO of what is termed the "Nigerian Scam" so that's why I mentioned it. :)

Haha yeah, I've gotten a few of those e-mails too! Classic, not sure how people fall for those anymore.

Don't do it, Jeff! I ordered a DVD from Joey and he accidentally sent me 500 of them and asked me to send back 499. I'm not falling for that.

...but I'll sell you one of the 499. ;-)
