Does this style of photography have a name? This dark dark lonely serene stuff. I am really drawn to it and would like to try my hand at it, but don't know where to start. (Hope its ok to post these links)

It pretty much resembles "zone system" photography, done a little more low key than usual. In some ways it reminds me of "film noir" also. That's what they call that in the movies I think.

I was going to say film noir also, but that usually implies some more emotional element to me. just IMO.

These are romantic landscapes which remind me of the work of Franz v. Stuck (Germany 1920s). Some of his pieces were etched, others erased from a black surface (photogravure). His work is generally placed under the label of Art Nouveau, despite the seriousness which characterizes it.
