Alice In Chainsâ¦. Minus Layne Staley (which of course is not really Alice in Chains at all).

I know nothing of concert photography; this was my first attempt. I thought I would share my thoughts anyway.

I was surprised at how the water parted for me as I moved through crowds carrying my full gear (I am almost never without my tripod etc.). Everyone made way (I was almost embarrassed by the deference). I moved through a sea of humans right to the front of the stage offering nothing more than âexcuse me pleaseâ.

I had installed the 85mm 1.8 thinking that the speed and reach would best serve me. And it did for the most part. It had one very serious weakness though. While being an excellent lens in general it, it is absolutely sucker-than-yucky at really close distances. So⦠when the big moments presented themselves; when the band members stuck there mugs right in front of me⦠I couldnât get the shot. And the crowd was too ferocious to consider swapping lenses mid- sea. It would have been great to have a second camera with a good fish on it.

Light changes quickly at a concert (duh). I did more dialing than need be â I should have switched to Av mode and just let the camera do its best.

Even wide open I needed ISO 1600. I donât remember the last time I needed such a high ISO. Fortunately, noisy concert photos look ârightâ to me.

Eventually someone from the pit told me that if I took one more photo he was going to escort me out. Same âole story â no professional looking gear. And it was my fault really â I was drawing a lot of attention to myself by holding the tripod way up and taking crowd shots.

If I owned a good quality fixed-lens point-and-shoot I certainly would have taken it instead. But I donât.

I hate the marring copyright. I only added the watermarks because I donât want anything to become of these images.
