Hey you all

I have been asked to shoot headshots for an upcoming pageant in exchanged for a full page ad in the brochure and university newspaper, as well as allowing print orders to all the girls in the pageant. that's not my question...i'm the official event photographer as well, and I am going to be selling prints as well. this is my question.

i have a printroom account, where i could set up an online storefront of the images, and then sell them allowing the client to come in and use credit cards, etc. problem is, this takes a huge chunk out of my profit, so i was wondering if there was any other way you all would recommend the sale. in the past w/ my single shoots, i have set up a proofing gallery online w/ numbers on the pics, had the clients e-mail me a list of the pics they want and sizes, and ordered them and collected the money that way.

with this i know it will have to be quite a bit more organized, and i want to maximize my sales volume, so i was wondering if anyone out there experienced in this would mind helping me out with a few pointers. or should i say screw it and just put it up to the online credit ordering system and let the cut they take be chalked up to unneeded hastle.

thanks so much everyone

Hey Jon. For the pageants I've shot I use a smugmug gallery for proofing & ordering. With SM you set the prices where you need them to be to get the profit level you want. With online ordering you don't have to deal with EVERY pageant mom. It works well for me.

I also arranged to have a table in the lobby with some large print samples, post cards & smaller prints for sale on the night of the event (taken the night of dress rehersal). Grandmas, etc., will grab the 4X6s for $10 all day long. :)

ooooh Cindi thanks so much, I will do this no doubt. sounds great! i really like the idea of the table at the front entrance/lobby of the dress rehearsal. this is just what i was after! any other ideas / suggestions are greatly appreciated! I am thinking of doing it through my printroom account just to avoid hastle, and to ensure that everything is doing in an organized manner. that'll keep me from having to hunt down checks, etc.

i was thinking of getting business cards made that had a website address that the gallery would be available for ordering, good / bad? this would be left on the table the night of, next to my "prints from the dress rehearsal" :D

thanks everyone, i really appreciate the input!
