Alright, so let's all go out and get our KameraKondoms and plan a Rain GTG to test them out. Who's with me??!? Hmmmm, perhaps Spring may be better. :)

Heh ... I'm sitting in Longview as well. I work at the Red Canoe, but live in La Center.

I would totally be up for something. Even something simple. There's a walking path at Round Lake a few miles from your house Jennier. I took my Free Study shot there and was there last night trying to get some Flora/Fauna shots before the sun went down. I love tootling around there for macro stuff and the like.

Anyway, I'm out of town this weekend at meetings in LA and Seattle. I do have most Mondays off and Jenn and the kids are always up for hikes if your kids like that too. How old are they? BTW, Laine is a 23 birthday too. :)

Small world! There's a Red Canoe right up the street from my house, then then again I think there are several around here. :)

I'd be more than willing to host a little camera buddy (club) get together at my place in La Center, since it seems like it might be in the middle of some of us.

Why don't we start a different thread for our discussions if there is interest.

WE love to go on hikes. I was at Round Lake this morning. Tons of Canadian Geese there this am. My kids are 7 and 9. Two girls.

I shoot kids' football in the Portland, OR area -- I shoot in the rain all the time.

I first bought a "raincoat" for the camera -- a transparent thing that had gauntlets for me to put my hands through and a velcro thing that wrapped around the lens. I had no luck with it -- it was nearly impossible for me to operate the controls of the camera. So I made up a system that I've been very happy with for 2 1/2 years now.

First, I use a lens that is somewhat weather-resistant (Canon's wonderful 70-200mm f/2.8).

Second, I wear a hat with a brim so when I expose the camera, it's under the brim of my hat.

Third, I make a "poncho" for the camera/lens out of a yard-debris bag (really just a heavy-duty black plastic garbage bag). I can make 2 poncho's from a bag.

Essentially, I cut the bag in half down it's length. I take one of those two pieces and cut a slit in the corner (where the bottom corner of the bag was) large enough to just slip the lens hood through. I then use electrical tape to tape the hood in place. I mount the hood onto the lens and camera and trim the poncho down to size. I make the length long enough to fold down over the camera and cover it's back (plus maybe 4"). I trim the bottom up to something like 10". (Having made a few of these, I now have a template, so I can cut them out quickly). So the end result is like a blanket folded over the top of the camera/lens with the front edge sewn together (except where the lens pokes through). The bottom and back are open.

I've experimented with velcro'ing the bottom shut, but it was more effort than it was worth, and even in a good wind, it hasn't seemed necessary. I've experimented with putting a wire on the rear flap that has a ring I can slip over my thumb -- that way I can flip the rear flap up and down easily -- flip it up to look through the viewfinder only after I have it up near my eye (and under the brim of my hat). I think this warrants more experimentation, but my early attempts were not comfortable.

I've shot games in the rain with this setup lots of times -- in merely misty conditions all the way up to windy pouring rain. It works well for me. The biggest trouble I have is keeping the face of the lens free of rain/mist. If anybody has a good way to avoid that, I'd love to hear it!

I hold the lens from below. I hold the camera from the right (through the plastic if it's really pouring and/or windy). I always have a spare "poncho" in my pack (it takes up no space folded up) and a roll of electrical tape too (can be handy for all kinds in situations).

Brian

PS I'd be up for a GTG. Can't this weekend though. Port Townsend Kinetic Sculpture Races this weekend! Pics from last year here and here.

Ya can't go wrong with my patented Kamera Kondom! It is indeed a plastic golf club cover... $3 at Wal-Mart.

And I was actually just wondering about this same thing a few days ago when the rain really started kicking in. alanfreed had posted in another thread about his KameraKondom that I think is a plastic golf club cover. I'm gonna have to come up with something because everyone keeps "warning" me about the rain. Can't imagine not shooting outside all winter long.

Welcome to the beautiful Pacific Northwest Jennifer! We also moved up here from the LA area. Back in 1991, if I remember correctly. But, I was born in Roseburg Oregon, so I'm really a native Oregonian.

I love to go out and about with my camera....but it is always raining. What should I use to help protect my equipment from water.....any suggestions?

Don't let the liquid sunshine get to you. After you've been here for a few years you'll never even notice it.

I usually carry a couple of small terrycloth towels when I go shooting outdoors. A regular bath towel would work too. If it's just sprinkling (like it usually is), then I just wipe the gear down whenever the water drops start building up on the camera or lens. When the rain gets semi-serious (like it usually does), then I just put the camera in the bag and wait for it to slow down again. The rain showers are normally brief and I just wait 'em out. When the monsoons hit, it's time to go do something else. That's why I have lots of hobbies. :D
