Okay, this isn't going to be an easy one...

1.) I would definately categorize myself as a beginner.
2.) I don't have any kind of professional eqipment to work with, no lighting, and just my little point and shoot camera.

I am working on my company website at the moment, and I want to do a picture of all the employees who work here to put on the website (all 5 of us, plus the owners 2 kids). The 5 year old has Angelmans disease, but he can stand/walk, or maybe his mom can hold him? I'm not sure on that one. I am abviously not looking for professional results, just something halfway decent. As I said earlier, I don't have any lighting equipment, special lenses, nothing like that. All I have is a tripod and my camera. Any tips, sample photos on how to place everyone, the best time/place to take a photo with no special lighting, etc. Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks in advance.

My initial advice... if you cannot modify the light you should shoot at a time when the existing light meets your needs. Morning or evening when the sun is just slightly above or below the horizon is usually best, but the window of great light can be short.

You can also use structures to block overhead light so your light is coming in from the sides at a lower level, but it takes some effort to find just the right location for a group like that.

You can also shoot in open shade and use onboard flash to give some pop.

I would definitely say take them outside and be careful with the shade, there are brighter more vibrant spots in some shade then others, experiment with the direction of the light in the shade to get the most lights catching in the eyes. good luck!

Thanks for your input guys. I think doing it outside is a wonderful idea, especially this time of year when it is so beautiful. I went on Google and searched for groups portraits, and got some really good ideas on positioning, so now comes the hard part, shooting it! I will post the results after I get them!

Might try looking around flickr too, for other ideas.
