I was wondering if anyone knows how i can mass rename files?
I have several folders and within each many jpg files which are named 1.jpg, 2.jpg.

I am trying to select various photos from the folders and put them in a new folder, but the fact they have the same name causes an obvious problem.

Is there an easy way to lets say make all the files in a folder change to, lets say, a1.jpg, a2.jpg

Bridge - assuming you have Photoshop

Edited to add details:
In Bridge, select the photos, then click on Tools and Batch rename.
You'll see all sorts of options about how you want them renamed.

Photoshop can probably with batch processing.

Cam2pc can do this also.

Too bad it's not Linux...

ls | perl -e 'foreach { system "mv $_ a$_" }'

I learned this filenaming system a few years ago & it hasn't failed me yet. yyyy.mm.dd.description for example 2007.10.1.DPCStuff. That allows windows to file them by date automatically and inside each folder I add a "new folder" that contains my edited or converted shots.

I just downloaded Batch File Renamer 2.51 at work. It's free and looks like it does far more than I need it for. You can do "find, change" or numerical or alphabetical sequence or add (delete) a specified text. I have photoshop 6 there and don't think it renames.

One vote for ACDSee. I love its ability to rename ... you can use information you type, you can have it number them, you can use a template, you can pull data out of the EXIF (camera, model, shutter speed, aperture, focal length, date of exposure, a million other things) you can have it do a search-and-replace on text within the name. Tons of possibilities!

For those using a Mac, there's Renamer4Mac.

Windows XP has an undocumented bulk rename method for files. In Explorer multi-select the files. Then right-click the first file and choose Rename. Then type in something like 'MyWeddingPic(1).jpg' and hit Enter. Bob's your uncle! All subsequent files are renamed to 'MyWeddingPic(2).jpg', 'MyWeddingPic(3).jpg', etc.

I can't believe I have had XP for so long & I never knew that function existed. That is so simple

Note - it is undocumented!

I've found MRename pretty useful.

Another to add to the mix - "Bulk Rename Utility"

Website...

I use it A LOT - it is really good... and it's free!

Thanks for the link. I have been having to make a file and put subfiles into it in order to archive pix files to DVD. I have 2 cameras alike, so the numbers overlap when I shoot.
I can batch change to date shot for titles, but it does not change the DSCF number names which the computer uses to track the files.

This feature is alive and well in Vista.

Note that it only really works if you use (1) - MS apparently isn't smart enough to detect what number you enter between the parentheses and start from there.

Still, cool tip, thanks!

I like this one PFrank. The flexibility is incredible and you can save frequently used renaming patterns, plus you get to preview the name change before you actually do it. I'm using an older version but now that I've peeked at the website I may upgrade (it's free; why not?).
